v 4.6 update error
« on: April 25, 2006, 08:41:01 AM »
First-timer here, I get the following error message when trying to update Avast v 4.6:

"Cannot connect to download40.avast.com(0.87.106.114:80)..."

My firewall (ZoneAlarm) is set to allow Avast. I'm running XP Home SP2 on an HP ze2000z laptop.

Read a post that recommended repairing AVAST, but when I click Change/Remove, a window flashes open and closed so fast I cannot read it or get it to stay open long enough to repair (or uninstall for a reinstall).

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,

Are use sure it's not a Zonealarm-problem.

You must give avast.setup permissions when it asks.

If you have an entry for it in ZA, try and delete it, and answer yes when prompted from ZA.

If not, you have to wait for one of the gurus here...

Thanks hlector,

I went into ZA Program Control and found the "avast! antivirus Update" was no longer allowed.  Don't know why that happens, but its fixed now!

Still not sure why the avast change/remove button won't work in Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks again for your help,

~ D

When you updated from avast 4.6 the content of avast.setup will also have been updated and this change will have been detected by ZA and it will almost certainly asked for permission again. If you were a little quick in blocking and didn't realise what it was and that would effectively block avast updates.

An avast repair in this case wouldn't have had any effect as it was the firewall blocking, although why the change remove button didn't work is a mystery to me too.
