No Alert/Informational/Warning Popups
« on: September 10, 2017, 04:42:55 PM »
Hi all,

I have a Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz Processor, Acer Aspire One Netbook with 1 GB Ram running Windows 7 32 bit and I am having some trouble with my Avast Free Version, 17.6.2310.  Whenever I have a warning alert or even trying to access the new Equifax Security site, I can hear the alert but no popups are visible.

I have cleaned installed the software three times using Avast Clear and went through the registry once, and deleted remnants of the ProgramData folder under C all three times.

Also if I right click my system tray icon my Gamer mode button and the "Show last informational message" button is missing.

Any help on the matter would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hi, I was just wondering if I'm the only one that has this issue?  I'll make this the last message, but this time Ive included some screen grabs.

Thank you!

If you had the Gaming/Silent mode enabled, Avast Settings > General section, then you shouldn't be getting audible alerts either.

There has been much said about the popups and the fact that they are also put in the Notification area (Bell icon at the top right of the AvastUI), so I don't know if this is also having an impact.

What alerts are you getting (and when) as that may also determine what you see if they aren't considered critical ?

I can include a screenshot tonight (mountain time), but I have that feature disabled in the General Settings and under the components section as well.

I know that the EquifaxSecurity2017 site has been fixed - but before it was - or if I go to the EICAR site to download its sample, I can hear the audible alert but no popups, no system tray notifications or any AvastUI notifications in the top right hand corner or in the notification pane are visible.

Thank you for the response by the way!

Steve.

As promised David, two more screenshots:

I know for sure on 5.png it - game mode - doesn't matter if it is not enabled or enabled, I still have the same issue either way after required reboot when that option changes.

Thanks!

I don't believe that the components Game Mode is the same as just the Silent mode (used to be called Silent/Gaming mode).  Not being a gamer I have never used these, but the settings in Game Mode are more to do with performance than just stopping alerts.  That said since both aren't enabled that isn't the issue.

Not knowing what the actual alert is (and what you were doing at the time) doesn't help identify what shield is alerting and give something else to look at.  That is why I suggested looking at the Notification area after getting the alert, to try and pin down the shield/cause of the alert.

I'm not sure if avast isn't overwhelming your little Acer Aspire One Netbook, I have one of these also on win7, but shortly after purchase I bought a 2GB RAM stick.  Currently I don't have the latest avast version 17.x.xxxx installed, so I have no reference point.

Thanks David for looking into this, I wouldn't be surprised that if this was the case that Avast is overwhelming my machine.

Ive noticed that since the 17.6.2310 update that Avast has been slowing my machine down, even 17.6.2303 was doing way better on the same machine.

Thanks again.

You're welcome, hopefully there is something on the current beta session for 17.7.2311, there is also meant to be a beta update on Friday.

My little netbook - Acer Aspire One, Win7 Starter (32bit) 10.1", 1024X600 screen, 2GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Atom N255 (1.5GHz dual core) CPU and 250GB HDD.  It is still using avast free version 12.3.2280, I didn't like the massive UI on version 17.x.xxxx so I had the Program Update set to Manual.

The show last message no longer exists.
What's the screensize of that Acer ??? Wonder if that may be an issue.

It's on my post just above yours Reply #8 - it is a 1024X600 screen - and why I have been banging my head against a brick wall asking avast to make the installation window and the main UI resizeable.

That would make life simple..... Let's hope it will finally happen ??? Maybe resizing the display would help it that's possible.
Did it with my Dell but don't have an Acer. :)

I still use that screen resize hack to adjust the screen resolution (above default native resolution) if I'm installing avast clean or over the top of the existing version.
