access is denied?

I tried to update my avast antivirus today and it said that I had received an incomplete update.  Then it told me to restart my computer, so I did.  Then I noticed that there was no avast bubbles in the system tray.  I went through the troubleshooting tips on the website and no luck.  I even tried to uninstall the program but it would not allow me to.  I don't know what's going on here.  I have tried accessing it through my shortcut and through the start menu, before it was saying I had to locate the file, I would and it would say access is denied, but everytime I try to open it, i see a box that says C:\WINDOWS\system32\aswBoot.exe application cannot be run in Win32 mode .  I'm lost.

The file shouldn't be this one, that is the boot time scanning.
Can you try:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashdisp.exe (to get the icons)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashsimpl2.exe (to use the skinless version)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashsimpl.exe (to the normal skined interface)

Did you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing. If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

I have exactly the same problem. Additionally I can not unistall AVAST and when in Explorer I want to access the AVAST directory for manual removal I get "Access denied". It is also not possible to run a new installation of AVAST, as after start of  setupengpro.exe it just vanishes and never comes up with the opening screen. AVAST services can not be started manually ("access denied".)

I can not repair the installation, as since obviously the directory is locked, no file out of there can be run or used or even viewed.

I have also tried checkdisk, etc to no avail. And until the AVAST update today the system worked flawlessly.

Any ideas on this?

Yeah, my problem is exactly the same, when I go to change/remove the program there is no popup window to allow me to repair the problem.

Did you try to use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html) booting at Safe Mode?

Hi,
I have exactly the same problems.  :o  ???
Then i try to uninstall with the remover but there is one folder that can't be erased.
Then i try to open this folder but all i see is "Access Denied"  ???
Then i try it to remove it in save mode but , "Access Denied"

I changed the name in the log to : XXXX
At last i try to reinstall the program and at the end there appears this :

i removed the program succesfully with that link, however when I tried to reinstall the program it couldn't.
On the setup log it said progress end- forced vps: can't create C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\400.vps

I have the same problem.
Running on Windows XP
I had to reboot on safe mode to appropriate to me the folder Avast4
Then i can erase it.

But i still can't install the new version  ???

It sounds like what you did may help me, as I cannot access or delete the Avast4 folder, after supposedly removing the program.  Excuse my lack of knowledge, but how did you get to 'safe mode' and then to the Avast4 folder, to delete it please?

If you are running windows XP Home Edition
You have to reboot
on Windows screener on start, use F8
you will have options to run the safe mode
then open windows explorer, go to Avast install folder right-click on it
click on Properties then security / Proprietary, choose your name in the list , click on the option square below
and then click OK

Hi. Yes I do use XPHome. After clicking on 'properties' on the Avast folder' I see no sign of 'proprietary' or 'security' link :(

I too am having the same problem after updating my Avast. I am running Windows XP SP2. Prior to this I did note that for some strange reason my Avast! was not updating and would only update if I right clicked the icon and said Update Program. This was happening for the last few versions, so I suspect a problem with a version of Avast! which caused the update function not to work anymore (although virus updates did).

The problem here seems to be clear. Access is denied, even to Administrators to the Avast directory itself. No one can uninstall, run or access the program because of this. If anyone comes out with a workaround, please feel free to let us know as right now all of us who are experiencing this problem cannot uninstall or run our favorite virus scanner!
