hello,
So it turns out that the new GUI is incompatible with XP.
No, the issue is somewhere else
like I said before , I use win xp sp3 , and 17.7.2314 UI is compatble as 17.6.2310 was also (like DavidR said) , just a little bit longer but never more than 10 secondes.
Lot of xp users do not encounter any particular worries elsewhere.
I'm sorry it does not work for you  :-[

nb:off chance , do the terminal server (windows service) would not be disabled ?

@DavidR:
Please report then, and good luck!

I have updated and for me there is essentially no difference in the loading of the UI (from version 17.6.2310) it still takes a little over 4 seconds.

You say there is no problem when you open the UI from the context menu of the avast tray icon.
Quote
When opening the GUI via SysTray icon context menu, the settings part of the GUI is working as previously.

This however, is unrelated to any issue with opening the main UI, you are bypassing it as the two step function is only initiated when opening the main UI.  I often use the context menu to bypass the main UI, not to avoid any problem, but to access some option directly or in fewer steps/clicks. The About Avast being a direct access to the Settings section, from there it is much closer and you aren't having to open multiple windows or the massive main UI.

What is the reason that you are opening the main UI ?
Or is it opening automatically.

Are you experiencing any other issues (that might seem unrelated) ?

If you're concern is to get to the settings, just do a right click
on the Avast icon in the system tray and select about.

@bob3160:
Thank you for your hint, but I knew that. I described that, when opening the GUI via SysTray icon context menu, the settings part of the GUI is working as previously.

@chris05:
TermService is running. Thank you anyway.

@DavidR:
- First of all, good to hear it's working for you.
- Correct, I'm accessing the settings via SysTray icon context menu to bypass the main GUI window.
- The reasons to need to access the main GUI window are various IMHO, e. g. to have access to the virus container, self-defined and built-in virus scans, Avast tools and not to forget turning hints on and off.
- And yes, sometimes the main GUI window automatically opens, such as after a reboot after an update. So annoying.

So it seems users are dependent on the accessibility of the main GUI window, which doesn't work for me, on none of my XP computers (as described, Home and Pro, all of them with SP3 and IE6).

Any further hints welcome.

P.S. @ DavidR:
Are you - like me - running IE6? Might that be the point, that the new GUI is using some browsers resources?

No, IE8 is the latest IE version on XP SP3.

Although IE is used for many things in the OS, windows explorer, etc.  I don't know if the avast UI uses IE or any specific browser interface.

I think that there used to be a C++ requirement some time ago, but again I don't know if this is still the case.

Hm, interesting. Well, all of my XP machines have IE6 and no .NET framework. And this cannot / should not be changed. The question is, if somebody really knows that these (IE7+ and presence of .NET framework) are mandatory requirements. And C++?

Can anybody state this for sure?

Thanks for involving!

Just to add some more fuel to the fire, IE6 and IE8 aren't secure and really shouldn't be used.

Is there really nobody able to help? I'm so desperate.

I admin a couple of XP SP3 computers, all with IE6 and without .NET framework, some Home and some Pro. I run tons of sensible scientific software on them. I really like avast - but now it's kicking me out in favor of a new oh-so-fancy design of the main GUI window. That's it?

I don't want to say goodbye to avast, but I don't see another way.

Please, this is my last call for help.

The Avast UI utilizes CEF (Chronium Embedded Framework).

I'm pretty sure C++ is required. IE8 may also be required but I would recommend you to install C++ and then see if that helps.

@Alikhan:
Thanks for posting. I had a look at this and found, that in systemroot\WinSxS there are v11 and v14 of msvcpx.dll. That appears usual to me.

Every new dot rev of Avast seems to have a different GUI. Features are rearranged just to ginger up the user? What other rationale can there be? It's like Avast enjoys playing games with its users. This has been going on, apparently pointlessly, for years. Changing the GUI doesn't improve the effectiveness of the product. It just makes it harder for users to make Avast software work for them as they would wish it to every time the GUI wheel is reinvented

Having said all this, Avast Free 17.7.2314 works very well with Windows XP SP3 (fully patched with POSReady updates and running Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro 9.3, MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit beta and Comodo Memory Firewall).
