Problem with replacing licenses

I referred over 20 friends and got a license for 3 years, before that, I had one which last 1 year, I downloaded the longer lasting one via email, and then tried to replace it. Nothing happened.
I also tried to reinstall Avast Internet Security and then I again applied the newest license file, AGAIN, it says it lasts a year.
This is obviously some bug.
How does one workaround this?

Referral system was only beta and never got out as final.
It was dropped over 2(!) years ago.
