« on: May 09, 2006, 06:23:50 PM »
[email][/email

Sympatico (Bell), Canadian ISP, has been switching over there email servers to a new type. Since I have changed my email account to this new server I can no longer use avast 4.7-827 to scan incoming or outgoing messages. It gives error message something about wont work with SSL server.Talking with there support people this new server does not work with Norton AV either. Has anyone else run into this? Is there a fix? I'm using WinXP with Outlook Express.

If your server uses SSL you need to use Stunnel for it.
Avast mail scanner doesn't support SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connections, but with Stunnel you can manage them. Take a look here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=10428.0 to see how to set up secure email with avast!.

Since SSL/TLS e-mail is encrypted and decrypted in the client, external virus scanners (including avast!) can't read or scan it.
The solution is to pass e-mail in and out un-encrypted from your client (Outlook Express, Thunderbird, ...) to a proxy program (Stunnel) that does the actual ssl or tls encryption/decryption of the pop3/smtp e-mail and communicates directly with the ISP server on the appropriate ports. Stunnel now comes as an installer which installs Open SSL and Stunnel so now you just have to download the installer version from here http://www.stunnel.org/download/binaries.html
The best things in life are free.
