Avast Update and Zone Alarm
« on: May 05, 2006, 08:11:37 PM »
Every time Avast update trys to run, zone alarm asks me to allow it, even though I tell it to always allow.

Is there soem setting I need to change?

Do you place a tick in the box that says remember this setting on ZA?

Yes, I told it to always allow.

I remember I did something to prevent it from asking me every time, but after a program update (either of Avast or ZA) it is asking me again.

When Avast updates the main programme then the update service changes. ZA will recognize that the programme has changed and ask for permission again, this is a security check against viruses or malware hijacking files on your system.  It is normal after a programme update

Yes, I would expect that, but it is asking me every time it wants to update, not just after a program update.

Do you think I would be better off in a Zone Alarm forum?

Probably, but having said that I have been using ZApro and Avast for years with no problem.  However I have experienced memory lapses from ZA, so I now shut down ZA prior to shutting down the system and it usually remembers

One possible quick fix would be to go into the list of approved programs in ZoneAlarm and delete any reference to avast update.

Let ZoneAlarm ask again at the next time update runs and see if ZA remembers it then.

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

Even if there's been no change to a program, once in a great while ZA will "forget" some or all of the permissions you've granted.  I suspect this is probably due to a profile file, or whatever ZA uses as an equivalent, that's become corrupted.

As alanrf suggested, try deleting the program entirely from ZA's permissions list, so that it has to ask you anew.

This might be stupid of me but have you tried deleting the avast programs in ZA, Re-Allowing them with remember, then giving them "PassLock" access within ZA?

Ok, I did delete all the avast entries from ZA, and it asked me once after, and it has remembered not to ask me again.

Thanks for the help all, now if I can just remember what I did next time this happens.
