Icon not in system tray
« on: May 09, 2006, 01:38:06 AM »
Hi, everyone. I am brand new to the forum, and have been using avast for a few months. I really like it.
I saw that the version had a problem, so followed the directions and uninstalled (with the exe suggested) and the reinstalled.
Now, the icon does not appear. Had no trouble before.
Did install that microsoft defender, but that's all that is different.
running windows pro xp with service pack 2
compaq presario
1.5 gb memory
200 hard drive
amd 64
I have the newest ver 7., the one that is patched now.
Would someone please help me out? Feeling very unprotected. Do not have symantic anymore.
Appreciate any advice for the avast newbie.
Found out about you at Cloudeight.
Again, glad to be here.

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers.

Do you have any other security related programs that might monitor startup programs, e.g. adaware, spybot S&D, etc.

Did you not first use the windows add remove programs (uninstall) rather than the uninstall utility that is meant to be used if you have tried and failed the normal uninstall ?

The icon on the system try doesn't effect your overall protection, providing that you have ashServ.exe, ashMaiSv.exe, ashWebSv.exe and aswUpdSv.exe in the task manager processes.

If you run ashdisp.exe from the avast folder, will the icon appear?
Which other security programs do you use? Can any of them blocked avast startup entries?

Running the ashdisp.exe has fixed it!
Thank you so much.

Yes it should fix it (temporarily) but when you reboot the same thing that caused the disappearance of the icon may do it again, so it is important to find the true cause and answer the questions we asked.

Good morning
OK, rebooted and icon disappeared.
I have all 4 of the exe's.
But I do have 2 ashcfg.dll's.
I run ad-watch (report on start-up)
Also installed adaware se pro, spyware blaster, and spybot.
And windows just added their new security program.

I understood the remove directions to adivse using the uninstall utility only, as it removed the program better than add-remove. So I didn't use the add-remove function.
the 'I' icon also is not there, either. It did appear when I did the temp fix.
Thanks again for help.

AdWatch is almost certainly the culprit here, either is didn't report on start-up or you didn't know what ashDisp.exe was and blocked it. I don't have AdWatch, but if you are able to reverse decisions made, restore the ashDisp.exe. If not disable AdWatch, reboot and see if that resolves it (probably not), you may need to uninstall avast, reboot, reinstall and reboot. Hopefully that should be OK and it is up to you if you want to enable adwatch again.

I shall try it now. But never had the prob before the update. I don't particular care for adwatch anyway.
Thanks
