LOL so changing something that has always worked the way it has isn't a bug?
Silent Mode means silent. If you want to see a notification, don't select Silent Mode.

But this is not the way Avast! worked in prior versions - that's the rub.
It seems to me that when a user requests a direct scan the silent mode should be temporarily disabled and the results of that manual on-demand scan should be shown. That is exactly the way previous versions worked when in "silent" mode.

This is intentional.

Silent mode blocks all notifications so when you run a context scan (right click scan) you will see nothing.

Silent mode should be enabled when gaming etc but not all the time and you will be missing malware alerts too...

The Free version has ads which can be disabled in the paid version. Avast needs to make revenue from free versions.

If this is "intentional", then it has changed over the last 1 or 2 releases because it didn't use to work this way! All us long-time users just want the darned thing to work the way it used to. I have no qualms about being "interrupted" during a scan that I initiate from File Explorer.

Stupid design change to modify this behavior.

I am glad the last 2 posters understand what I am saying because clearly the rest have no clue what they are saying.

I do get what has changed and I'm sure have stated it. This is not a bug.

In the previous version, the scan resultswere not given in the form of notifications but rather in the middle of the screen.

Avast has decided that scan results will now come in the form of notifications. I know you will find it annoying since the results will not show with silent mode enabled as the feature was abused for blocking ads all the time which it wasn't designed to do.

Ads can be disabled by purchasing the paid versions and as I've said before, the majority  of users do not use silent mode. If it's really that big of an issue, you can always disable silent mode before running a context scan.

@Alikhan - I completely understand. However, I would still stand by my statement that this is a poor design decision from a usability point-of-view. And it breaks with the previous philosophy for on-demand scanning.

I am so close to dumping Avast after this change. I am so tired of having to turn off Silent mode in order to scan a file and then have to enable it again. This is the dumbest change I have ever heard. This is like telling your car you dont want warning lights, but if you are about to run out of gas, DONT TELL ME! Are you kidding me.

Silent means silent. Why is that so hard to understand ???

You also have the option of purchasing a premium version of Avast which would block the ads.

<snip>
becuase I dont want to be spammed with with garbage from avast.

If that's not a possibility, you either live with it or find another anti-virus.

I love when people comment when they read one posting and not the full posting. This change has broken the program that has worked fine forever. Silent does not mean silent when you issue a command and nothing happens.

What is so hard to see that if I asked to scan a file manually that I am given a result. Silent or NOT. It always worked before this release. It looks like someone broke this feature and has not fixed it. Do you have any clue how annoying it is to have to turn off silent mode and then turn it back on after every manual scan. I don't want to be told about every issue I can possibly fix unless I am getting a virus. Then I want to be told.

This is my last post on this thread.

The notification behaviour will not be changing.

Just a note, silent mode stops all notifications so it will stop malware notifications (e.g threats blocked by Web/File/Behavioir Shield). Threats will be blocked but you won't be alerted.

This is without a doubt one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen, when someone directly requests a manual scan it should actually display the result, its not rocket science. And that's exactly the way it used to work too before this insanity took over.

Since when does software get worse and less convenient with time? With Avast I guess. The only real reason it seems to have changed is that some idiot corporate bean counter sees it as a way to force people to look at ads. Well guess what, people are not that stupid and if you're trying to drive people away from Avast, towards more sane antivirus software then you're doing a wonderful job, I'm already looking at other options.

Hopefully there are thousands more just like me.

Simply turn OFF Silent Mode and you'll see your notification.
It's that simple.

Wow, no fecal material Sherlock? But it used to be even simpler, Previously you could do an explorer scan and see the result irrespective of whether silent mode was on or off. It was easy, it was unobtrusive, it worked and worked well no matter what your settings. This ridiculously stupid change was made solely as a cynical ploy to force people to view ads. And frankly it makes me want to get rid of Avast in favor of something better.

And you are WHO to say it wont be changing? I have already been in talks with Avast about getting this changed back.
