Can't update definitions or Program
« on: November 30, 2017, 07:23:07 AM »
I'm so embarrassed to even admit this, but here goes anyway.....

It's been quite a while since I've updated Avast. I had to uninstall and re-install it before with this same problem, which is pretty much being unable to update virus definitions or the actual software. The update starts up, but goes between status bar and an "unknown error" notification until it gives up. Now, I thought it was TinyWall at first (long story there....boils down to my laptop suddenly hating Comodo Firewall and getting nothing but errors trying to start it up..) and I called myself making sure to allow each process related to Avast. I could be missing something.

I'm currently updating Windows as I speak, seeing if that will help. I'm using Windows 10.
Aside from TinyWall, I use SpyBot and ASC 10 Pro.
If anyone needs more specs (you probably do, and I'll give you what you need...) let me know. I'm trying everything I can before giving up. And...honestly, I would rather not give up on Avast.

Thank you.

Sometimes added features we install get in the way...

Suggest uninstalling TinyWall firewall for now and run with just the native Windows Defender Firewall for now and see if things get better/fixed with that setup for avast.

I'm leaning more toward Spybot as the problem.
Process of elimination will root it out. :)

If you change DNS to Google DNS, does it work then?

Facing issues with update now, Clean installation of avast!
Removed and reinstalled after using the tool back in that one the issue was setup is still running which was stopping the update.
Now this one after install shows up Unknown error. :/

This actually did help. Which sort of worries me, only because I'm so used to having TinyWall or some kind of firewall outside of Windows Defender. However, as soon as I got rid of it, everything updated fine. Oh well! Farewell to TinyWall. Thank you so much.

Definitely got rid of that. I never really used it, to be honest. Bit of a force of habit of downloading it with each new computer or laptop. Probably one habit that should die hard, I suppose.

Malwarebytes FREE will do evrything SpyBot does and a lot more
SpyBot have a small update once a week (wednesday i think) Malwarebytes can have around 10 updates a day, so in one week it may add more updates then SpyBot does in a year

Malwarebytes is also member at Virustotal.com meaning evry undetected sample uploaded to VT is shared ... SpyBot is not at VT

Now we are way off topic   ;)

Anyone remember Malwarebytes JRT ?  https://www.malwarebytes.com/junkwareremovaltool/

JRT is now integrated in Malwarebytes AdwCleaner (since V6)  https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/

There are work/plans to integrated AdwCleaner in Malwarebytes    ;)

Quote
Also, most of JRT detections have been incorporated in AdwCleaner v7. We progressively and silently integrated most of its technology in previous v6 releases during the last months. Most of it but not all of it, as JRT detects a few elements AdwCleaner doesn't have vocation to detect (like temporary files). Please get in touch if you see that AdwCleaner missed some elements compared to JRT. Share your findings here please.
