Re: NEW Version: 17.9.2322 **NOT STABLE**

You are incorrect in your comment regarding the fact it is stable and working properly. It now causes either crashes or auto disable of the outlook add-in. Many people complaining about it and a fix would be appreciated. I personally see the failure on outlook 2010 and 2013 on 4 different computers. After the update, outlook fails to load the avast add-in. When multiple attempts made to re-enable the add-in, outlook will crash.

Still no fix to behavior shield turned of sometimes when starting up pc >:(. And I don´t like avast trying to trick me to buy clean up premium when they show a new function in Avast antivirus pro which scans your computer and then want´s you to pay to fix what they call problems. Anyhow I don´t trust such programs could do more damage than good. And I don´t like that the animation of the icon is gone, no big deal but if there is an option to animate it should work.
windows 7 home premium.

Might as well get used to turn it on manually. Seems like they (Avast Team) don´t have a clue what it´s all about.

my laptop is short of RAM. In this new version, there is 1 more avastui.exe as expected. However, it uses way too much memory which makes avast no longer one of the lightest AVs on memory usage
I had never problem with playing fifa 18 on my laptop but recently, I got the message of memory full at least twice today

I agree. I have plenty of memory, but that doesn't mean I like to squander resources. I have two AvastUI.exe processes that add up to over 100 MB of memory footprint. This is with Avast hidden to the system tray, and excluding the Avast service. I'm talking about just the UI. Why would it ever need 100 MB for that?

No animation of the tray icon is a known bug.
Those complaining about ram usage should realize that ram not used is actually wasted.
The only time this becomes a problem if more ram is needed that you currently have.

I have less RAM to allocate to programs that actually use it productively, than a UI for an AV that isn't even visible 99% of the time. It is wasteful and inefficient.

By the way: on a modern OS RAM is never unused very long. It caches everything in the background. So yes, having that space occupied by bloat is annoying and simply unnecessary.

If a developer can actually give a good reason as to why the UI needs 100+ MB, I'm all ears. As it is, it just seems lazy.

exactly
since this version, avast has used a significantly more memory, 3% more of my 8Gb of RAM. Unused memory is wasted but it's a problem when there is not enough memory to do daily tasks
if avast uses this 3% to store signatures to speed up the scanning process (like emsisoft), I can accept it but they use it to fix the UI issue, which I don't have any problem except of being too slow to open (I know it would be fixed on January so please do not repeat)
now avast memory usage is quite similar to other AVs

I just updated Avast from v17.8.2318 --> v17.9.2322.
On Windows XP SP3, the new installation created a serious problem in copying JPG files. When copying a *.JPG file, it appeared to be copied, but the file could not be opened (Error: Can't read file header! Unknown file format!). The most serious problem is that neither the original file or the copied file can then be deleted because explorer.exe is still processing the copy. This then causes an additional problem when trying to shut down because WinXP has problems terminating explorer.exe. After rebooting, the original and copied files are both readable, but neither can be copied. This does not occur on all JPG files, but only about 10% of them. I don't know if other file types are effected.

This problem occurred on both my WinXP SP3 PCs. I UNINSTALLED Avast 17.9.2322 and the problem completely disappeared!!
Is this fixable? Are there settings in Avast that could be adjusted to prevent this problem? Or am I stuck with v17.8.2318?

The problem does not seem to be present on Win7x64.

Seeing your message, I do not know if it is linked but yesterday I could not attach a JPG file in a forum.
"Error on the attachment"
I will investigate this track with other OS
nb:it was also with Win XP SP3

now avast memory usage is quite similar to other AVs

Being lean was one of the reasons I chose Avast years ago.

Having lots of RAM so this footprint isn't a direct problem is very much a brute force 'solution'. Saying it doesn't matter is fundamentally wrong imo. This implies that Avast coders only need to be as efficient as Avast users are able to afford memory. In that regard 100 MB might as well be 10.000 MB. My system will chug along just fine if that amount of memory was gobbled up by the AV UI. But it would be silly. Just as 100 MB already is silly. For a UI, I mean really...

Again: if there is a good reason, I might not be bothered that much. I'd like to know.
