Restore from Chest does not work
« on: December 23, 2017, 01:27:07 AM »
I can access the Chest with the steps in
  https://blog.avast.com/2013/11/03/how-do-i-access-the-avast-virus-chest/
I can see and select the files there, I right click on them but no Restore option appears.
And in the pull down button at the bottom, the only option is Delete.
Why doesn't this work?
I am using AIS 17.9.2322
Thank you!

Try accessing the virus chest using the right click menu of the Avast tray icon (bottom right of your screen).

Thank you. That's the way I am doing. But once the chest opens, there's nothing I can do with the files. I right click, or first check the box and after that right click, or double right click. No success... :-(

That is certainly a pain as previously this didn't work if you went to the virus chest by 'Opening' the main UI. But did work if the user right clicked on the avast tray icon and selected Virus Chest.

If that is what you were doing (?) then it looks like they have broken that also. I say this as currently I'm not using the latest avast version on any of my systems (using 17.8.2318) and I have a Restore option opening the chest from both options.

Avast are aware of this bug (several topics related to it in the forums), when it will get squashed, as an avast user I don't know that.

EDIT: added image.

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Thanks to all for the hints. An update, if you have the patience...
I was about to 'Repair', when I tried a last chance: this time the pull-down at the bottom worked! It asked if to restore or sending (right-click on the file kept not working). Anyway I didn't restore the file because I didn't have at hand the removable drive it belonged to.
The following day I made the same. But no result! I did the Repair, restarted Windows (7): no result. Restarted once more: could restore two files but failed at the third. New Repair, new restart, and I finally managed to restore all the dozen PDFs.

Now for an off-topic: if I had to qualify Avast with a single word, it is UNPREDICTABLE. For about one year, some days Avast warned its Firewall was deactivated (though I had manually disabled Windows Firewall), some days there was no warning. Some days it says my network is vulnerable to Wannacry, some days not.
And don't mention SafeZone was part of the AIS I had bought, but after reinstalling Windows and Avast I learnt it is now a paid option.
And Avast knows my credit card for the automatic renewals, but if I want to add VPN or the like it asks for the number. Suspicious...

Enough. Is there somewhere inside or outside this Forum where Avast people will care to read the critics?
Thank you again!

Apparently you haven't tried a clean install. :)
Just because Avast doesn't reply, doesn't mean they don't read the forum. :)

bob3160, you're right, I didn't try to completely remove Avast and reinstall it, at least for the chest issue. A good idea to try if I ever have to struggle with that again.
But the other case I mentioned of intermittently deactivated Firewall, had remained even after a force majeure full reinstall of both Windows 7 and Avast. So it's a pity that an otherwise good product is obscured by deployment defects.
I consider the subject can be taken as closed. I do hope Avast brains can pinpoint the bugs.
Kind regards to all!

Apparently you haven't tried a clean install. :)
On the other hand , as you say here , with a clean install , content in chest will be deleted.
So,it would not have helped at all DanielPerez on his initial request to restore his files ..... because they would not be there anymore  ;)

Re-read his reply, he repaired his install which doesn't delete anything just fixes the installed files when possible.

Re-read his first post (not reply) , it's just what I mean  ;)
he did not want to delete these files but restore them .... in the beginning
Quote
I right click on them but no Restore option appears.
delete has always been possible for him , no need to clean install
Quote
And in the pull down button at the bottom, the only option is Delete.
The only way if he doesn't want to lose quarantine files to restore later is "repair" , no "clean install"
it is in this sense that I asked the question in the other subject of the possibility of saving and restoring the avast settings before an uninstall.
I know now that it's not possible and that's why I wanted to warn DanielPerez (and others) to pay attention to the uninstall if he really wants to keep a file present in virus chest

As already stated, you can save your settings and then restore them when doing a clean install.. You can't save the files in the Virus Chest if you do a clean install.

it seems to me that you often tend to answer questions that are not asked but you turn the answer to save the face
Here, in this case, it was never question of knowing what could serve  the restore settings, you explain it ,but does not care anymore.
The only question is:
Can DanielPerez restore a file from his quarantine after a clean installation?
I answer no, and you say it yourself.
The only message to pass is that the file will be permanently lost (for avast), and not talk about rain and good weather
If a repair does not return the "restore" option then users will need to know what will be the consequences of uninstalling ->  file will be permanently lost

Seems very strange to me that the original poster hasn't been back to ask further questions yet you
seem to want to engage in or start a confrontation.
Wrong move since you apparently still don't understand or haven't read the original question or answer.
If you want to continue this conversation, be my guest but count me out. I've replied to the original question.
You as in most cases are off topic and simply looking for a confrontation. Enjoy your day.
