What version of avast do you have? I could happen that you have not received update of GUI component. Such issues could be sorted out by reboot, if not please let me know.

Hi reboot did not have any effect. The version I have is 17.9.2322 build 17.9.37610 released on the 21/12/2017 Avast Premium. The previous release worked fine.
This is the same problem reported by kathandaland but the restart did not correct the problem. The problem was solved using the solution suggested by Asyn

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

My control panel (on Windows 10) does not have "Add/Remove programs"

How do I access Avast to repair?

Find avast in start menu
Right click on it
Pick Uninstall option
Windows will open screen with list of all programs installed
Here pick avast again
And perform either uninstall or change
Avast setup will open
Now you can perform repair
