Scanning master boot record

Does a smart scan or any scan for that matter scan the master boot record? If so is there a setting that you have to enable?

unless something has changed, avast does a rootkit scan 8min after startup

Thanks Pondus, so if I enable rootkit scan in any scan it will scan the master boot record?
