Why Avast Takes So Much Space
« on: December 30, 2017, 12:18:35 AM »
I am seeing that avast is taking 900+mb getting close to 1Gb.

Why is this, why this software wants so much space.

Thank you

My Avast folder is 1.05GB and I only have 3 shields (Web/Mail/File) running. No other components installed.

You need to be a little more detailed as to which sub-folder it is, two of concern are:

1.  the defs (definitions) sub-folder as VPS updates occur you effectively have a new sub-folder for each, avasts housekeeping should eventually clean old defs sub-folders.  Each one is if the order of 131MB, so it doesn't take long for that to build up before it amounts to a large figure.

2.  the setup sub-folder, this is a pretty big and essential folder, but I'm sure it could do with periodic housekeeping by avast.

Today the Avast folder, including defs and setup and every other subfolder, is about 940MB. Setup is a compressed folder so size on disk is 800 and something MB. So it varies quite a bit apparently.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't believe this has suddenly happened as a result of the 17.9.2322 update.  For instance on this win10 laptop I have yet to allow the update to 17.9.2322.  It is still on 17.8.2318, my AVAST Software folder is 1.13 GB (size on disk), larger than that of my winXP system with 17.9.2322.

Whilst the win10 laptop is 64bit and winXP is 32bit, I don't know if that could account for the difference or not.

So on my PC the AVAST folder takes up almost 2GB of space. Is thee any way to "force" Avast to perform this housekeeping that will clean out old files?

Windows 10
12GB RAM
256GB Samsung SSD

There are no specific settings to run housekeeping.

After doing the clean install would i be required to enter the license key?

or they are backed up?
