  • Come on lad! You've only got 70 yards to go.
So much for the wisdom of updating Avast.  Avast free 17.7.2314 has no issues with Windows XP SP3 (fully updated with XP and XP embedded security updates) on a Pentium 4 1.6GHz dating from about 15 years ago.  The two MS updates KB4056615 and KB4056941 installed and now work faultlessly and with no perceivable performance hit.

On my XP machine, Avast has micro-updated to 17.9.3761.278 (from 17.9.3761.0).  I was able to copy a test file successfully.

However, while I had the bad Avast, I installed Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for WES09 and POSReady 2009 (KB4052978), and I suspect it was not a complete installation.  So maybe I should now UNinstall this KB4052978 and REinstall it.  How do I UNinstall KB4052978?  And, specifically, how do I UNinstall it so that the XP machine will let me REinstall it?

Special thanks to Alikhan and Asyn ... and Cosmics ... et à chris05 pour son soutien moral!

chris05 - with the new micro-update, I was able to install ALL pending updates for XP.

Si vous n'êtes pas déjà familier, le fil de msfn (pour lequel j'ai ajouté un lien ci-dessus) est très utile pour garder votre XP actuel, en utilisant l'astuce POS.
