The newest news first:

The old forum-bug is back again!

If you don't know, what I mean, having written a pn or a post and you choose 'preview' or 'send', the whole frame is empty! That error we had for some years.
[ot]Excuse, please, that you have to wait so long, but my wife isn't ok, so time is very rare for me.[/ot]

The eating of posts when you try to post is a real pain and one that I didn't think had gone away with the latest SMF forum software version.

For me, I felt that the preview before posting was usually the best option, less chance of losing it when posting.  It was rare for me to have the post eaten when using preview even though I used preview at least once in compiling a post.  I have used it a few times during this post and no issue.

Before (on Firefox) using the Back (previous) arrow didn't help as the page would auto refresh resulting in the loss of the content.  However, for a couple of FF updates I have been able to use the Back arrow and see the content, using preview then allowed me to post (without loss).

Whilst I was having the trouble, I did find Form History Control add-on for firefox and that saves text content that you input for a period of time, days even, so you can retrieve what you have typed into text fields.

That said, we really shouldn't have to take these measures (or copy and paste) to ensure posts weren't lost.

Wishing your wife a speedy recovery.

Point 1: The back arrow I only used a few times, in the meantime, I've nearly forgotten it.

Point 2: Form History Control was new to me. Is it possible, that you need more RAM using it?

Point 3: Copy and paste I'm using often, for it's working fine.  I refuse for short pn or posts only.

Point 4: Thanks, another date is Jan. 31! Hope, we have power enough.

Point 1 - I use it a lot as all of my mice have keys that either duplicate the browser forward and back keys/arrows (or have configurable keystrokes). Much quicker than moving to the back and forward browser icons.

Point 2 - It is just another firefox add-on, I don't notice anything as add-ons are part and parcel of the firefox total RAM.  Up until FF 57.0 I had around 30 add-ons, when at a stroke Mozilla, firefox culled well over 80% of their add-ins as legacy add-ons as unusable.

What I can't stand in this forum should be talked about.

- Not answering pn or posts by certain 'Überevangelists' /'Moderator'.

- Deleting posts of other forum members without any reason!

- The chaos in the german board during 'Meltdown & Spectre' (only Asyn was present and has to
answer the huge amount of asks)!
 ;)

Concerning Forum bug:

Today I had to fight against it several times (see screenshot)! And this time after that even 'copy and paste' didn't work for the forum system refused to post!
So I had to roll back to that post I wanted to comment, had to empty it and then paste my my 'old' answer into the emptied body. After done so, the system posted my comment!

My ask: What's going on? BTW: I'm using my own browser (FF 52.5.3 ESR) inside the forum.

This as far as I can see happens for a few reasons (certainly in my experience).

1.  Taking a long time to compile your post can result in your session timing out and or server issues.

2.  The volume of activity may cause forum server issues, server issues don't necessarily have to be volume related. In that case you can also get other error messages displayed.

3  This I feel is a major cause, with a heavy attack of spammers, certainly yesterday, dealing with those spammers puts a heavy load on the forum.  I didn't see any errors displayed yesterday, but whilst bans are being applied the forum slows to a crawl and the forum Administrator needs to do some tweaking (what that is I'm not privy to).

If I'm taking some time over a response in the forum I tend to preview the reply now and then, I guess this may stop a session timing out.

Thanks, David, for yor reply.

Point 1: Maybe sometimes. Concerning the servers, I can't do anything.
Point 2: I see.
Point 3: That's right, but how can we stop that spamming?
Point 4: I did it now and then, but it didn't make any diefference: the forum system stood still.

Point 4: I did it now and then, but it didn't make any difference: the forum system stood still.

Point 3 - That is down to the forum software/administrator and what it allows/uses to prevent spammers.  How many times do you see newbies complain about how hard the Captcha is - yet how is it so easy for spammers for the first 3 posts.  We see lots of multi-topic spam by one user, you may not see this as those with permissions to deal with spam are very proactive.

Stopping spammers isn't easy as they (humans or bots) have a financial incentive, they for the most part come from poorer countries and would be paid a small sum for any effective spam.  Because we are very proactive in deleting and banning spammers, they tend not to last long on the forums, if we don't see them other forum users report them and we deal with that report.

I would have thought trying to spam a security based forum wouldn't be in their interests as the post doesn't last long and may not actually earn them anything.

Point 4 - This is down to the Administrator, to tweak the forum software, server hardware/software.
