How To Remove Avast Anti-Virus Screensaver
« on: January 07, 2018, 03:14:51 AM »
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium and the Avast free edition and just noticed that there is an Avast Anti-Virus screensaver in my list of choices but it does not do anything nor do I want it in the list of options.

Is there a quick fix to delete it without uninstalling the anti-virus program or is this Avast's sneaky way of including unwanted features without the option to uninstall it?

Deleting avastSS.scr from the Windows folder might do it.

I wasn't aware anyone still uses screensavers in this century lol.

The Screensaver scan has been removed from Avast for a while now - while they may be file remnants it shouldn't do anything.

You could try what Rundvleeskroket has suggested but if that doesn't work, a clean install will be your only solution.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit • Avast Free (latest stable version) •  Malwarebytes 4 Premium (On-Demand) • Windows Firewall Control • Google Chrome • LastPass • CCleaner • O&O ShutUp10 •

Thanks Rundvleeskroket-Deleting the suggested file removed it from my screensaver list.

By the way, I do not use a screensaver but noticed it in the list.

Q1. Nonetheless, what functional purpose does a screensaver serve or is it just for aesthetics?

Q2. If a thread has been posted but no one has replied, can it be deleted or only edited?

What functional purpose does a screensaver serve or is it just for graphical enjoyment?

If you had clicked the links i provided you would have found info like this

Quote
A screensaver (or screen saver) is a computer program that blanks the screen or fills it with moving images or patterns when the computer is not in use. The original purpose of screensavers was to prevent phosphor burn-in on CRT and plasma computer monitors (hence the name). Though modern monitors are not susceptible to this issue, screensavers are still used for other purposes. Screensavers are often set up to offer a basic layer of security, by requiring a password to re-access the device. Some screensavers use the otherwise unused computer resources to do useful work, such as processing for distributed computing projects.

Oh, so basically, a screensaver (without a password) on a LCD Monitor would just be for graphical enjoyment then?

LCDs can most certainly burn in. A screensaver can help with simple image retention problems too. But if the aim is to have Avast scan the computer while you are away from the machine, just have the screen in sleep mode.
