Sorry, I posted this in a different thread,  but it seems to apply more here:

Sounds like my problem earlier this evening.  Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium. Avast free 17.5.2303.  Had this same problem 6 months or so ago.  Solved it that time with a complete avast upgrade of free version and re-install.  This time was able to do a repair, and  then a re-boot.  Seemed to fix it.  Will see what happens next time I have to reboot.

Avast has now been up and running for probably close to an hour.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  I usually only have to reboot my system when the power goes out.

Curious, isn't it...I wonder how many people are running Windows 7 and avast free...and we are the only ones having a problem?

Many ppl around the world use Win7 as they dont like/agree with things win 10 brings along it self, yes it is better and newer system but it also has flaws that many users wont go over, Avast is by far most popular free antivirus solution, and believe me there is at least 30million win7 devices running this combo. We are not alone, it just might not happen to each and everyone just like with most software bugs, and many to be honest dont care that much to come register on forums etc...

Anyway i hope this gets fixed by Avast asap, i submited data requested, if im needed for some more info im here, will keep checking this topic for news. Till then i switched to alternative av solution.

Another day has come and this issue seems not to be fixed yet! On the system tray an x is appearing but it seems that security is working properly :P Is it safe, under those situations, to make any e-banking transactions?? Thanks! (Windows 7 SP1 32-bit)

I too have reported this in another forum thread.

I'm running Win 7 Ultimate, and this UI/service crashing began yesterday, 1st February 2018, on my Desktop and another unconnected W7 laptop, both of which are running paid for Avast Internet Protection.

There have been no Windows updates on this machine since 10th January, so that seems an unlikely cause.

So far, I have:-
- made sure the Remote Desktop service is set to Auto and running
- done at least 2 repairs of the installed program from Win Control Panel>Programs
- done a complete fresh install of Avast Internet Protection using avastclear, deleting driver files and program folders etc. as detailed by Avast
- run the avastsupport tool and sent them the results this morning
- torn out a lot of hair

The crash rate seems to have stepped up to about every 10 minutes or so on both machines.

I notice that, having followed the UI restart Avast screen lately, I now have two (both unkillable) instances of AvastUI running, at different sizes, in the Task Manager viewer.

This is really irritating, and not good for a product for which I've paid. Most galling is the lack of explanation of the causes of this, and endless re-installs and repairs aren't the answer; certainly not here.

I have the same. Result? Just the same - both restarting and rebooting Avast services. One thing is interesting - when AvastSvc.exe is closed and UI informed about it, opening the avastsupport tool restoring Avast service and tool reported that there is no problem with Avast software. Very strange...

I think what's happening with the support tool is that it sees the service isn't running, starts it and gives it a green tick. If you click on the "i" in a circle against the Avast Status Check at the top, the popup will show that it logged in red and corrected the problem. What it's actually doing is fixing the problem "on the quiet" and when that's done, reporting it's OK with a green tick. Most tools will report what's wrong up front before correcting it (if indeed they can).

I restarted my system for another reason, and it obviously loaded all the stuff I have at startup (quite a lot, as it happens), but Avast sat there quite happily for about 20 minutes without crashing. I then started up Firefox, and a minute or so later Avast crashed.

chrome.exe (described as Google Chrome in Task Manager) is in my startup, running from C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application. I killed it from TM, at which point Avast crashed. To me, that would mean some link between chrome and Avast, or else the UI wanted to report something, perhaps about the killed chrome, couldn't, and crashed.

Hi,

I don't think there is a connection between Avast crashes and Chrome. I'm not using Chrome at all. Perhaps there's a link between some programs and Avast Shields, for example web shield, and this connection is the cause of the failure. I noticed that the service resets more often when Thunderbird is enabled.

Avast will be releasing a VPS update sometime this morning that should
solve the problem for most of those affected.
As soon as I know when that VPS update is release I'll post it here.

Something must have been done as the problem has gone away, at least on my PC it has. Let's hope it doesn't come back :-).
