I am not sure about avast. But try Spambully. It is amazing and it learns each time you receive a spam mail . One of the best I have come across.

dgkiwi,

Avast is an antivirus program only.  However, it can check email for viruses and it's the best one I've ever tried for this.  ;D

Therefore, you will need a firewall and a spam checker also.  I use eTrust EZ Firewall 3.7.211 (free for 1 year) and SpamPal 1.53 (freeware).  :)

I know that you'll probably get more suggestions for firewalls and spam checkers.  But, I've used quite a few of the free ones and have settled for the ones I recommend.  ;)

For free firewall, sygate or zonealarm are very good, this site has a freeware section with loads of other stuff including antispam:

http://www.snapfiles.com

Its got top 20/100 downloads and how popular/good things are etc.
Avast is there and comes out tops.

You can check here at Ad-aware and Trojans Tools and Firewall & System tests sections...

To be short, I use Spamihilator (Culpeper uses Spampal  ;D) and ZoneAlarm free.
