It's a week later and I still can't run Avast on this one machine because it breaks Firefox 56, 57 and 58. The problems started with 56.

I've switched to Defender. No crashes in about:crashes for an entire week. Firefox is rock solid.

Is there anyone out there that can help me with this issue? I've been using Avast for over 10 years and prefer its high-performance (and sandboxing) in comparison to Windows Defender, but Firefox is non-negotiable on this workstation. Please?

You could try Firefox ESR.
W8.1 [x64] - Avast Free AV 23.3.8047.BC [UI.757] - Firefox ESR 102.9 [NS/uBO/PB] - Thunderbird 102.9.1

You could try Firefox ESR.

Thanks, Asyn. Unfortunately, ESR ends after Firefox 61, so that only buys me a little time, but for the time being ESR works.

I finally decided to run Defender and the latest version of Firefox instead, but that was a good call.

Strange I'm not having any problems with FF

Using Windows 10 v.1709 and running Avast Free. Wonder what add-ons might be involved ???

@Bob: Yup. It's super weird. I've got two other machines in the household running the same stuff without a problem. Same add-ons too, so it's not the add-ons.

This one machine? Definitely something to do with Avast. Figuring I broke my Avast install somehow, I even ran Avastclear and reinstalled thinking a full cleanup/reinstall would fix my install, but it didn't help. Unless there's some file/setting Avastclear missed.

Have you tried a clean install which should also include a new download of the Avast installation file.

Clean Install of Avast:

Yeah. First thing I did was run Avastclear in safe mode and scrub through the registry getting rid of any stray entries. There was actually quite a few entries for the old NG module that Avastclear missed. Installed from a full offline installer downloaded from the latest version thread on the Forums.

No love.  :'(

I was seeing a similar problem on two machines with Firefox and Avast.

I'm done with Avast, it's causing to many problems. I can recommend Bitdefender Free

Well, you guys really are the best. I'm keeping Avast on most of my machines because it has the best performance and doesn't turn up a lot of false positives.

Unfortunately, if no one can help me fix this one glitchy machine that has all the Firefox crashes, I'm stuck with Windows Defender.

I've tried other products, and Avast is the best I've found. I'll keep trying to reinstall it with each major version update of Firefox and see if the problem doesn't iron itself out.

ESR 52 and Firefox 55 work perfectly with this machine and Avast. 56 is a little glitchy. 57+ is crazy glitchy.

Thanks. You have a great product. I'm sure this is something they did with Firefox Quantum, since 55 worked fine (and works fine when I install it and don't upgrade).

I'll continue to work with the Firefox people and check in on this thread here on the Avast forums from time to time.

I tried and would not recommend Bitdefender. All sorts of shoddy practices. It doesn't make a restore point when it installs, the installer had problems on my machine (hung at 73% without intervention), and when I finally did get it installed the computer would not run for 5 minutes without blue screen crashes. The blue screens could have been me hacking the installer so it would complete, but it was a horrible experience.

That's why I know about the lack of a restore point (which every piece of properly programmed Windows software should make before it installs). I managed to get the uninstaller to run in my few minutes of working system time, so I didn't have to restore from a disk image, but it was looking that way if a crash happened before I could get uninstaller to work.

Their tech support was also awful.

I would recommend Avira as a competent alternative. I also have Panda, but I didn't try to install that. AVG is now basically a different UI over Avast, so I didn't try that either.

Really, for free AV, Avast is the best software out there, and it keeps your machine running with a very minimal performance hit. I hope this issue is fixed in a future Firefox update on my machine.
