Are you downloading from the avast.com site ?
Are you saving the downloaded file to your hard disk or trying to run it directly (as in your comment "downloads properly & starts to load installer," e.g. are executing the installation file setupeng.exe or is it running automatically after download ?

Does the installer quit with an error, if so what is it ?

I am downloading from avast.com.
I Tried both ways & neither works.
It does not give any error message.
The problem started when I had The trial registration and I tried to
Re-Register & put the code in.
It worked for a while but then It just disappeared,
I tried deleting its files from the computer & reloading it,
but then I ran into this problem.
At that point I was running ie 6.
I Tried it with ie 7 beta 2 & it still wouldn't work.

What do you mean? The trial version does not 'need' a registration. If you use a key (home version I suppose) you will only have to register one year later...

I tried deleting its files from the computer & reloading it, but then I ran into this problem.
This is not the correct way...
1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html)
4. Boot
5. Install again.

Do you use any other antivirus in this computer?

At that point I was running ie 6. I Tried it with ie 7 beta 2 & it still wouldn't work.
IE 6 or 7 make no difference here...

What I mean is that I downloaded avast with the registration that comes with it, then, when it brought up the
message telling me to re-register, so I went to avast .com & re-registered. I printed it out on another computer
and entered it into the computer that I was updating. After A while avast disappeared.
I did not think about uninstalling it under Control Panel-Add/Remove programs.
when I tried to, it would not uninstall, but would give me an error message.
No, I found out about avast through consumer reports just as I got this new computer.

And know, what happens if you try to install again in this computer?

Can you post the contents of the file <Avast>\Setup\setup.log ?
At least the last lines of it...  ::)

No the file Tech mentioned is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log it isn't a .pf file, ensure that you view all hidden files and DON'T 'Hide extensions for known file types' in Tools, Folder Options, View (see image). It can be opened with Notepad or any text editor, copy the last 30 lines or so and paste them here.

What is the full name of the .pf file and its location you were looking at, example (C:\windows\system32\suspect-file-name.xxx) ?

I went into my c drive and found program files, then found alwil software, then avast4
but at that point it displayed an error message that read:

C:\program files\alwil software\avast4 is not accessible.
Access is denied.

 :)  Hi "Oliver" :

You say you got a new computer; they usually come with
an antivirus program like Norton or McAfee already on
it ; what antivirus program was on this new computer
and is it still there ?

I think it came with norton but I uninstalled it because:

1:  I had it before and didn't like it.

2:  It wasn't free like avast.

Norton can be a pig to get rid of.

A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
