The problem I described has never been fully investigated by Avast support, all I received was some canned answers. I followed their initial suggestions to uninstall and re-install the software with their un-install tool but it did not resolve the problem.

Beyond that, support never acknowledged there is a problem nor investigated further even after I was asked by three different support staff to submit a support package and dump file which I did. I never heard back after sending that to them each.

I now decided to discontinue my relationship with Avast and requested a full refund of the AIS product because I am pretty certain there is a serious flaw in the AIS firewall product but also because I am very frustrated with the support I have been receiving. My purchase lied within 30 days of the refund request. I never received an email to acknowledge my refund request, no email with details of the refund procedure and date, and never received a reply even after submitting a separate request to billing to process the refund request.

All in all, I leave with avast in good conscience knowing that this is not the support level I came to expect and that the product does not meet my expectations. A company that is extremely fast at pulling money off peoples' credit cards should at least have a minimum amount of customer support and honor its refund policy. So far Avast has failed in all those. From my own experience so far I will recommend anyone I come across to not use avast products for the time being because of its poor customer support.

Good luck to all who use this product and battle through technical issues (I am seeing tons of new daily issues popping up in the forums here, way more than in the forums of competing companies). I was initially drawn to this product because it offers a sandbox to run programs in. But I can't accept a firewall that cuts my local network bandwidth in half (from 110 megabytes/second to 25/30 megabytes per second for local network file transfers and it also severely slows down remote desktop connections.

Thanks to those who helped in this thread to troubleshoot and who provided suggestions. I could not be more grateful as those suggestions went beyond anything I received in terms of support from avast staff.

Update:  I was eventually contacted by billing and a refund was issued to my account for AIS

The firewall in Windows 10 is pretty good. :) It's also part of the OS.
