Sounds like this is related to Avast Cleanup and not making sure that the folder containing the pictures
was excluded before deleting "unnecessary" files.

Use Recurva, it's free and i am sure you will save all your picures

Regular backups of stuff you don't want to lose should be the first option.  A robust backup and recovery strategy can save you from all sorts of issues.
