date ?
« on: June 16, 2006, 08:36:03 AM »
Hi have a problem with my computer , when I open explorer CPU usage increases to 100%,
my first thought was a virus, so ran a scan, nothing found, but when checking round found that the date had changed to 2046 ? I changed it back and restarted my computer and avast updated the iavs
I was just wondering if a new virus could change the date and so stop any updates  so it would be less likely to be found.

Yes Phil, this is possible.
Most probably you're running XP at the Administrator account, aren't you? Common user cannot (by default) change date and time...

 :)  Hi all :

I had the "Date" unexpectly appear in my System Tray one
day and changed it back. That might have happened
because several months ago I used "Black Viper"s
recommendation to "disable" "Windows Time" in my
"Services"; it is now on "Automatic", following the
recommendation of "Tweakhound"s "Services Guide" .

Yes I am using the admin account but I was sure I did not change the date, except to change it back,
It was just a series of events high CPU usage, unable to search windows and the clock that got me suspicious, I did an on line scan with panda as a second check and that came up clean.
I still think something is away .

xp pro ,sygate firewall, avast and a router with built in firewall.

 :)  Hi Sunchaser :

In your last post you did NOT mention any antiSPYWARE
program(s); do you have any, and if yes, have you run
     their "Full" scan(s) ?
At a minimum, you should install the good & FREE "Ewido"
from www.ewido.net/en IF you do not already have it .
It "specializes" in detecting & removing trojans, worms,
     generic dialers, etc .

yes run microsoft antispyware +spywareblaster+spybot as standard and have completed full scans on all.
my first thought was a dialer using explorer.exe but did a search using koppix4.0, but nothing found but the single program where it should be.
thanks for the pointer for ewido I will give it a try.
