My Schannel error is related to Avast
« on: March 17, 2018, 03:06:29 PM »
Hello,

Since March 12, 2018 when i updated avast program. Whenever I reboot my system or even in idle, the Schannel error pop out in event viewer in random time and the maximum longest random time is an hour. The Event 36888 Schannel error: "The following fatal alert was generated: 40. The internal error state is 252" is always logged in my event viewer.

So isolated everything i can do in start ups, services, and recent installed and uninstalled program in my system but that error still exist. But not until i decided to uninstall AVAST with avast uninstaller and purged every avast folder even in registry in observed it. The error logged don't appear anymore. But then when I re-install AVAST again. It came back. This is the error I am talking about:

- <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
  <Provider Name="Schannel" Guid="{1F678132-5938-4686-9FDC-C8FF68F15C85}" />
  <EventID>36888</EventID>
  <Version>0</Version>
  <Level>2</Level>
  <Task>0</Task>
  <Opcode>0</Opcode>
  <Keywords>0x8000000000000000</Keywords>
  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2018-03-17T13:37:39.631203500Z" />
  <EventRecordID>339436</EventRecordID>
  <Correlation />
  <Execution ProcessID="768" ThreadID="900" />
  <Channel>System</Channel>
  <Computer>Yindows7-PC</Computer>
  <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" />
  </System>
- <EventData>
  <Data Name="AlertDesc">40</Data>
  <Data Name="ErrorState">252</Data>
  </EventData>
  </Event>

Can somebody please explain what's going on. Can this thing can't mess up the operation of my current operating system if I let that error stay there for a while? Thanks.

I dont know  if this information would be help you to resolve the problem but I made some tests on different computers with the same opersting system (windows 7) and also same avast version and the problem appears on the computer that has an ethernet cable connection to the router, that is to say that I dont connect manually to wifi.
So when the computer boots, the schannel errors appear on the event viewer. My question is could be possible that the inspector wifi is making the problem when checks the network?Then every hour appears the schannel error. But if you connect to the netwrok manually by wifi the error never appears.
I dont know if it is a coincidence but i hope that it would help to resolve the problem.

Many thanks Edith

hello, can confirm that this happened to 1 of my PC too, and even PC using AVG
so i assume this problem is from avast or avg, since both antivirus is 1 company now

so i tried uninstalling avast and avg on each of my pc and the schannel problem gone. reinstalling and its back

edit : forgot to mention that both pc is using windows 7 ultimate 64bit, 1 pc using avast, 1 pc using avg. both have same schannel problem exactly like what OP post.

I am having the same problem.  I have Window 7 Home Edition SP1 with all updates applied.  Like an earlier post, I too have a direct ethernet connection to my router.
