Firstly, thank you all for bothering to still help and please be patient with a dim-wit  ‘cos some of the technical language is a bit beyond me.

I have three email addresses - two on vodafone.net, the other is on accamail.com

They appear to use Pop3 to receive email and SMPT to send email.

When I pause just the Web Shield on Avast - the emails still work.

As far as I know, Internet Explorer 6 is the only browser I have and I don’t have any hotmail addresses.

Finally, by following ardvark’s instruction, I have found the Internet Explorer Repair tool.  If I click on that – what does it do?  I’m a bit scared I will lose my email facility.

 :)  Hi Watergypsy :

Forget about any "Internet Explorer Repair Tool"; I doubt
you will need it . You reported "18% system resources" ; this
usually means you have spyware on your computer & since
you say you never had an antiSPYWARE program on your
computer, get that "A-Squared" program I recommended on
your computer and run its "Full Scan"; this program is good at
detecting & removing lots of different "malware" ( trojans,
     worms, spyware,etc ) for those having a Win 98 Operating System .

Hi watergypsy...

The process, to the best of my knowledge, essentially "rebuilds" the browser, checking for corrupted or missing files. It shouldn't effect anything with Outlook Express or in how you e-mail, although I would back up your wanted e-mails just in case. This was just a suggestion on my part, you don't have to if it makes you feel uncomfortable.  :)

Looks like Spiritsongs has got the whole thing figured out. Let's hope he/she is right.  ;D

Best Regards...

A Squared is about to be put to the test!  I shall also remember, for future reference, the presence of the Repair Tool.

Thanks everyone for being so very helpful – I’m grateful.

Kind regards
