multiple instances of avast secure browser?
« on: April 04, 2018, 06:44:35 PM »
Hi, i've been using Avast Antivirus (Free) for years and i've never experienced any issues up until last week. In fact this issue doesn't cause any problems in my pc but it annoys me. Because i'm a picky pc user and i check what processes my pc runs in the background, from time to time. Since last week (can't give an exact date) i've been observing many instances of Avast Secure Browser running in the background (without actually running it). I don't use the Secure Browser unless i want to make an online payment. Now, should i get worried about this? Should i just uninstall the Secure Browser?

Here's my screenshot

As the Avast Secure Browser is due to go live tomorrow, that version should be the OEM or finalized version.  It is very likely you are running the beta version atm.

In any case, I cannot test this until tomorrow.  Check your startups to see if it starts automatically for you.

Hi meric07,

Welcome.

Just installed the latest version (see about pic attached below):

Check your settings when Avast Secure Browser is open to see if the third pic has it enabled to startup when Windows starts up.  Click the three vertical dots next to the avast icon on the upper right to get to this setting.  Scroll down and change if needed.  Default setting is shown.

Chromium browsers run many instances of their own browser processes.  This is normal.  Avast Secure Browser is a Chromium-based browser, as per the first attached picture.  It is also open source based.

I count 18 processes running, all which disappear when I close this browser.

I'm recalling something from way back about browser instances in the Task Manager.  I can't recall if it was Google Chrome that depending on the number of open tabs you had there would be additional instances of the executable.

I just wonder if this isn't something of that nature.

I haven't got the secure browser (and may not even get it) so I won't be able to test this anomaly .

Yes, we'll have to wait for the OP to respond.

In any case, multiple instances of this browser are normal and nothing to worry about.

If the default setting was changed to auto-start the browser and not as shown, simply setting that setting back to default where it does not auto-start may sort things after a system restart.

Deep inside the Advanced settings is a setting where ASB background processes are allowed to run by default after the browser is run but that remains as is.

I'm not sure if the new avast secure browser is Chromium based as it was in its first incarnation.

In 'about' pic attached above you'll see ASB is Chromium-based

Hi, i didn't want to start a new topic because i think it's the same problem.

Avast browser opens multiple processes hidden in the background. After 2 min using only one tab, i have 12 processes running, and it keeps increasing the number.
The ones that use more memory do not correspond to the open tab.
I have to close the browser every 20 min or so, because it crashes.
Are all these processes supposed to be there, or is there a way to prevent it?

Thank you!

I don't think this is the same problem, given the topic is very old (almost two years) and would relate to an old/very early version of ASB (Avast Secure Browser).

Do you have lots of tabs open at the time ?
The reason I ask, is most browsers act in a similar way, currently on my Firefox browser (I don't use ASB) I have 8 instances of firefox running.  This is broadly in line with the number of tabs I have open, I suspect this is the same in Google Chrome and ASB is a Chromium based browser.

Given that ASB is also isolated from your system (the Security bit) it is doing other things which may contribute the the process count you see.

I have only one tab open, and now it's 13 processes.
If i open more tabs, or even if i keep opening different pages on the same tab, it can open up to 30 processes on the background, and then it crashes.
Maybe it's the security part, i hadn't thought about that, but still they are a lot for my laptop ;)
Thanks
