ANSWERED: ?Prevent Scans After PC Off for Days?
« on: April 05, 2018, 07:37:07 PM »
Using Avast 18.2.2328 on Win 10.  I couldn't find this info but I'm sure it is around.

After turning on the PC after it's been off for several days or weeks, Avast starts up a FULL scan and a QUICK scan simultaneously.  Win 10 is accessing the OS disk at 100% and then the scans add even more overhead.  The result is that you can't do much of anything for many minutes.  It's so busy it's difficult to get to Avast to kill the scans. I'm sure Avast notices that scheduled scans are many days late so it is trying to catch up.  Not needed!

So, is there a way to keep Avast from trying to run scans after a long PC off period?

One way would be to unschedule your scans before shutting down your PC for an extended amount of time.

Your system is bogging down because there are too many processes running at once (system resources).

Since Avast has real-time on access protection, imo daily scheduled scans are not needed and a waste of system resources.  Real-time protection is not resource intensive and, with a top-line a/v, has 99% or more efficacy.  Your system will run faster and quicker if you do not run scheduled scans.

The only viruses or malware you may find with a manual scan will be in archived files, and that will be almost all the time.  Archived files cannot harm you until they are opened, and then real-time protection will step in.

Point is to prevent infection in the first place.  Real-time protection does that.  If you are looking to prevent infection by routinely scanning on a daily basis, after the fact, the horse already left the barn a long time ago.
