How do i stop this crappy update and only get critical updates ?

tia
Doesn't sound like the upgrade but simply the April security update ???

What was it that you attempted? The security update for April or, the Windows 10 Spring Update ???
I personally always disable the Avast shields before doing the monthly Windows updates. It makes their success more likely. :)

Did you disable all things running that aren't needed to do the update ??? Did you disable the Avast shields ???

Sorry but that sounds more like postponing what eventually will be a problem that needs to be resolved.

I'm not even sure that works like that any more.

Originally it obeyed your instruction about a metered line, so it didn't automatically download the update, but I recall that this is now ignored.  The only thing which is followed is not to reboot during the working hours that are set.

I'm sure one of my recent monthly updates had all ready download and was awaiting my instruction to reboot.  That said I don't think that would apply to such large updates as this latest one, Windows 10 Update (Spring Update).

Hopefully the problem is resolved in a future update.

Believe the way I have set the metered connection I will still get critical updates.

Looking on the internet some have delayed the update for up to a year as they have professional edition.

will try again in a few months after I have a known good system image.  :)

I would suggest looking for a system restore point. Once rolled back, make sure the system is totally up to date then,
follow the directions. :)

Got one from 7 days ago that I used tonight, working like a dream again.

The update has stopped at Updates are available. We'll download them when you are not using a metered connection.

Believe the update was stalled around a round a week ago due to bugs then pushed out again.

more testing required.

I wound up here via Google, FWIT I did disable Avast til next boot, the major difference my Avast icon looks different, possibly because I am using Endpoint Protection.
Regarding Endpoint Protection, see: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=218584.msg1459543#msg1459543

Hi David, still shows a few days later Updates are available. We'll download them when you are not using a metered connection, or you can download 1.76 GB-1.76 GB using your current data connection (charges might apply).

Been in touch with Fujitsu who said my product is not supported after windows 10-1511 and can not help.

just hope I still get the critical updates and future updates of 1803 are bug free.

Hi

I have same issue with Avast/1803 update.

Windows Update downloaded and installed the update this afternoon.

A reboot after the update completed (without any apparent issue) rsulted in BSOD.
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL for aswStm.sys.

Booted into safe mode and after searching for the file on the disk identified this as an Avast driver. I tried to open Avast but the "UI failed to load. This is really embarassing. AV Service failed to load". Clicking the "Restart Service" button does not work.
I ran the avast installer with intention of removing Avast but did a repair instead and then rebooted successfully. Avast interface was then working as expected.
A subsequent reboot after updating the audio drivers and avast has failed again although Windows does load. Tried to open Avast and the same UI error has returned.

Have run another repair, posting this before rebooting in case BSOD's again!

Avast 18.3.2333
Windows 10 Pro - 1803 build.

** Reboot was succesfull and Avast now opens and is working. Not sure how long this will last though. Will Update post in due course.

PPS. verification image almost impossible to read and sound doesn't play :(
