AvastUI.exe using 99% CPU

I updated to latest Avast 18.3.2333 on Windows XP SP3 - now AvastUI.exe process is using 99% CPU. Tried Repair, change and reinstall to no avail.  Any suggestions?

- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast..?

Thanks for reply - but I have removed Avast - every update seems to bring new problems. Even on my Windows 10 Laptop it shows one shield disabled , even though all shields are enabled.
I have given up on Avast

It's a known bug that doesn't effect protection since nothing is turned off and will be fixed with the next release.

Is there a way to find out what in particular is distracting it? as I have a similar problem with a 100% cpu locked up and nothing much working, it would be nice if its program could indicate what function it was running (or stuck on) not just a general mention in task manager.

In that way we could at least turn off a specific thing or know what to check on.

Hi David,
can you created a dump  file of AvastUI.exe when it is using 99 % CPUto find  out which part of UI is responsible for it.
Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc) -> AvastUI process (cpu 99 %) -> right click -> Create dump file !
Please zip the dump file as avast_ui_exe_cpu_peak.zip and upload it to avast ftp.

Tried to create a dump file but did not see what you describe, my system is a Win XP with free Avast. The system has got more "crabby" since Java issue started, was using Firefox without problem then its esr channel stopped supporting java so lost many working links, started using safezone which works but needed training from its cousin Opera.

I know its an old system but I have a massive amount of data that only it can work with, then this starts with a 100% cpu tried scans, sfc scan/checkdisk still no clue, it would be good if your taskbar icon could put up a prompt saying ""scan in progress.

Any other ideas as it has been mostly faithfull for many years stopping bugs getting in.

dont worry you can create a dump via process explorer tool https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

1) download process explorer https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer
2) run it as admin (in xp it is default)
3) disable avast self protection settings->throubleshooting-> uncheck "enable Avast self defense"
4) right click in process explorer to AvastSvc.exe process when it is using CPU -> Create Dump->CreateFull Dump...
5) zip dump file as david_619avastui.exe_cpu_peak.zip and upload it into avast ftp.

Will do that, but thought it may be of interest to add a bit of extra informat ion first:-

When early during boot I watched Task Manager and its Processes this was the usual scramble of items firing up before it gets down to two :-     svchost.exe----SYSTEM and AvastUI.exe      both fighting for 49-50% of cpu each hence 100% if left this it just carries on for me, but if I Shut down the svchost Avast wins all 100% and I tend to get my system back quicker.

Avast (after a while) will then put up one of its POP UPS either junk on my drive or VPN, I know they are a bit of advertising but unless I remove them they are not "Turn Offable" it seems. I do not know if it is this that causes my problems. I do know some programs get moody if a bit is removed as it will often get put back on a next update.

Java keeps telling me there is a new version but despite my telling it to not bother and ignore (XP not suitable) unticking boxes still keeps trying so I wonder if this is another issue for Avast?

I know there is a larger global cyber war going on, shown by the lack of "chatter" about it in forums, this will I am sure be resolved and possibly related to Avast in some way plus "web format change".

Is there a solution by ripping out some of Avasts lesser extra functions to reduce its load on my system?

Reminds me of the very old "dog fights" between say Win95/98 and the system bios of long ago as to which had system control and you had to choose which gave the "better result" to work with.
