There are lots of posts on this issue. Avast has posted several "solutions" to this problem, none of which work, at least for most people.

I started a thread about this on another forum: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=219142.msg1462257#msg1462257

There is some information there about how to re-install the previous, functional version of Avast Free Antivirus and get the latest virus definition database so you are secure for the time being.

Avast failed at the first two restarts after the program update. It started fine at the third and two subsequent restarts, I wonder if it just needed the update to take before the problem was resolved. Anyway ... that's enough restarts for one evening.

Too many restarts for me.

A permanent fix needs to be issued.  :-\

Same  here, have to reboot every day or 2.

Does anyone from Avast monitor this blog, or is this being ignored?

If Avast is monitoring, please post whether this issue being actively worked on. By when is a fix anticipated?

If it is not being addressed, that would be good to know so we can look around for alternative software and stop wasting time posting about it.

Did a fresh install of Avast free, I have four items showing in the core shields which are all showing as green being On, but why is it that when I right click the avast system tray icon and avast shields control the top heading for Enable all shields in brackets it says (1 disabled)

Why would this be as when I click on that option and go back it still says 1 disabled.

An old bug known bug that hasn't been squashed. Avast is aware of it.

On this forum:

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=219275.0

it was announced that Avast would not long support XP, announcement to be made at the end of June.

Give the apparently large numbers of users to run XP, this seems inadvisable.

Even Microsoft will be dropping support for Windows 7, positive I read that somewhere.

Avast is talking about ending support for XP not Windows 7.

I am hoping that the virus definitions etc can still be updated when using 18.3, if versions 18.4 and beyond remain/become incompatible with XP.

I didn't directly say Avast was dropping support for Windows 7, I was merely adding info with regards to a dropped system by a major supplier,  in others words its not just avast.
