Avast installs Google Chrome
« on: May 25, 2018, 02:03:49 PM »

To the Avast team:

Just now Avast installed Google Chrome on my computer.
Without my knowledge.
Without my permission.

That's a no-go, absolutely.

Nobody installs software on my PC.

End of my connection with Avast.  >:(

Yes, I think so after an actual update. But without any question or permission.

Maybe, I'm not sure. But even if it was so, it's not correct to plant unwanted software with a simple update.
I had other and more important things to do and did quit a message, that's all.

I will change to another free software that doesn't mislead to unwanted products - maybe MSE or Avira.

I have had two people over the past week tell me they never saw the after reboot splash screen with options to install Chrome automatically checked, but did have Chrome installed after reboot. They have the settings for automatically install program updates.

This has been reported to me with Avast Free, updating to 18.4.2338, one on Windows 7 and one on Windows 10

This remembers me at another similar case, where Avast decided to change the installation of a ccleaner program.
And some Avast team mamber thought it would be nice to defend this action.

Guys - never change anythig on our computers. We trust a company whose tool is linked deep in our operating system. We cannot trust people who steamroll us with unwanted and clever hidden functions.

So far I've managed to remember this threat to my computer, but it should be opt-in, not opt-out.
I once tried Chrome - in a 'moment of madness'. It was not to my liking at all (being very restrained here - I could be rude about it!). Then, uninstalled it and had to spend a lot of time fixing things that it had borked.
I do not, ever, want this this charming offering.

Using Windows 7 Pro 64bit, fresh install with latest Avast UI:1.0.382 App: 19.6.2383
I was running Windows update for the first time and also installed Avast whilst doing this. The Windows update is still going (almost 2 GB of updates) so I disabled Avast shields for 1 hour. I was gone for about 5 minutes after that, and returned to see Chrome had installed , opened and set itself as default browser!!

>> There was _no_ splash screen with options for Chrome.

I have not restarted my computer!
You'd think if there was an option , I'd at least get to choose before this dodgy-as software decides to do what it wants to my PC.

Just adding my 2 cents to this old conversation

With the end of Win7 support from Microsoft we all have to change to version 10.
And that comes with it's own rerasonable malware protection.

So from this moment there's no more reason for installing Avast or any other extra av software ;-)
