Can't remove Avast from laptop
« on: June 18, 2018, 10:32:36 AM »
Hi Guys

The April Windows Update caused the laptop to boot into a 'recovery options' loop, none of which work; whilst generating windows error messages.
Unknown to me Avast/Microsoft came out with a fix. But my nephew tried a 'Diskpart' fix of his own. So I'm not in a position to use the Avast/Microsoft fix.
The laptop  after booting is still trying to carry out the April Windows Update; but after it's completed; the only icon on the desktop is the 'Recycle Bin'.

I'm using a Rescue Disk to access the internet. But believe that if I remove Avast completely then Windows should update. I've tried various ways to remove Avast, Nothing so far works.

On harddisk C: I have the files Windows and Windows.old.

To be honest I don't know. He says he tried to create a partition; But he's used the 'clean' or  'delete' command to remove the original partition. Everything is there; no loss of data; the partitions have been rebuilt. Now I still have the original issues.

Without further details it's almost impossible to help.

Do you have any backups..?

I've backed up the data (although there are some files that I still need to locate);

No it's the free version.
Unfortunately, there's no additional support (Email/Phone) for Avast Free.

That's not great. But expected; I've added Avast and Microsoft to the certainties of life; it isn't good.

Unless you have an image backup that can be restored, it pretty much sounds like it's time to format the HD and start
with a clean install.  :(
