Until recently I had no problem with 18.8.2356, but in past few days had problem with avastui.exe process rising to 50% of CPU with scvhost.exe taking the remaining 50%. Not a lot of CPU to do anything else.
My experience is posted here:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=220639.msg1549868#msg1549868

So far I have done:
1) Repair of Avast. -No improvement.
2) Uninstall (using avastclear) and reinstall. -No improvement.
3) Uninstall (using avastclear) again, search and delete all traces of avast on the machine.
Reinstall Avast.
Stopped Microsoft Update (valid still for MSOffice updates, not WinXP)
Only after that has CPU calmed down a bit. AvastUI does peak for a a few mins but dies back afterwards no sustained thrashing as before.

I am now wondering if an earlier version of Avast is better suited to WinXP than 18.8.2356. I can't remember the reason DavidR gave for rolling back to an earlier version. That was some months back. Comments welcome.

Whilst I kept a copy of 18.8.2356 installers, I didn't keep any earlier versions, so advice where a stable earlier version can be downloaded could help.

@Asyn,
Thanks for that link.

I now need to find out from the few other WinXP users remaining on here, which version of Avast may be less problematic than 18.8.2356.

I found I had to go back as far this topics version, anything higher gave the same problems.

@DavidR, by "same problems" do you mean excessive CPU use by Avast?

Yes, got to he point it required a restart to be able to do anything.  Pretty well documented in this (big) topic if you are willing to do some reading.

@DavidR, thanks for reply.
18.8 is misbehaving less now after the attention it received, but think I will download 18.5.2342 in case it goes barking mad again.
Yes I will have another read of this (big) thread when I have a few hours spare.

Regarding why this release is recommended over avast's final XP release,
Was it ever determined what caused the High CPU?  Was it a problem in the behavior shield?

Just a bit late to revive this resolved topic.

No one really knows as it was never resolved/fixed in 18.8 so how could anyone (avast user) know.  All I found was that it was 18.6 and builds up to 18.8 where heavy on CPU usage.

You will need to read the 18.8.xxx release topic to see what was reported there.

But as Bob says a bit late to be revisiting this issue unless you have XP, in which case start on 18.8.xxxx and see if it works on that system.

Thanks for the info.  I did install the latest, but only the file and network shields.  So far it's working,
but I only use XP for short periods here and there (4-way boot on the same PC, 8.1, XP (2 installs) and Linux)
I was forced into this because the earlier release stopped working on both XP's within a day or two of each other
and was not repairable, I assume it had expired
