Avast will not disable in Windows 10 Pro
« on: June 27, 2018, 09:12:36 PM »
Hello.

Avast refuses to disable via the Task Manager\Start Up and MSConfig.

The StartUp refuses to set to disabled and the Avast selection re-checks themselves in MSConfig after clicking apply.

Shields were also turned of "Permenently"

I am running audio software that the antivirus is interfering with and it needs to be completely disabled.

If avast is interfering it should show a popup warning.  Please attach a screenshot of warning.

What audio software are you running?

You'd need to select Passive Mode to disable the real-time scanners as in the picture attached below:

You'll need to reboot to allow new passive mode settings to take effect.

Or, you can simply uninstall and allow Windows Defender to provide protection.  Reboot to complete uninstall.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit 22H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.1.6099 (build 24.1.88821.762)  UI version 1.0.797
 UI version 1.0.788.  Windows 11 Home 23H2 - Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.2.6105 (build 24.1.8918.827) UI version 1.0.801

SAME problem, but no scanner or audio file connection. It happens to me when I modify and save a .docx file and then also save the same file as a PDF. It saves the PDF the first time, but on the second try, can't rename, can't save, being held by Avast. Sometimes it is released with a reboot, sometimes it is not! And the Advast UI is blank. I think this problem has a large foundation and scanner, audio or whatever issues are nothing more than Red Herrings. The problem is Avast, period! Yes, I have the latest edition of Avast and this started with the most recent update on 6/26/2018.

Although I agree that I was able to properly disable Avast via the MSConfig and the TaskManager\Startup up until recently. I find it quite odd that it no longer does it after all these years of perfection.

However, I will try your solution, because my Audio Studio Environment is Firewire supporting the external audio hardware. Always uninstalling/re-installing, no thanks. Never needed to before.

When Avast in on, my audio glitches and drops. I am streaming, not running packets. I have spent years disabling it via the 2 mentioned entry points and never had an issue.

I will let you know if your solution works.

Thank you.

I'd no idea you'd had an issue with Avast for years.

Likely source of not being able to disable is 'Self-Defense' is on and active in Troubleshooting.

You are running Windows XP/7 SP1 64-bit operating system?

Passive mode allows a second antivirus program to be installed and provide protection.  Depending on your operating system (you didn't say) Windows Defender would run or you install another a/v solution.

When running Avast Free v.19.8.2393, apart from un-installing the Avast software, please can anyone advise on how to disable ALL avast processes on Windows Start-up.

Previously, as with the OP, I would simply de-select all avast services and start-up apps in msconfig. This is now not possible, as the avast services are re-selected, when selecting Apply in msconfig.

I have Self-Defense disabled and have tried enabling Passive Mode and disabling Avast Shields.

OS is Windows 10 Pro v.1909 (build 18363.476). TIA.

Why no reply from an Avast representative?

Theoretically, in Passive Mode, Avast is out of the picture and only there as a second opinion product.

That may be, but Avast processes are still running. My question was how to disable Avast processes, without uninstalling.

The msconfig utility has been around for 20 years, for good reason. Recent Avast releases have stopped msconfig performing system tasks it was designed for.
