avast not activated
« on: July 03, 2006, 08:45:39 PM »
:)I have install Avast V.4.7.844 latest edition 3 times now and although it works ok the on setup, after booting, Avast will not activate.

I have had McAfee but remove it. Still McAfee is still present on startup with the McAgent, McUpdate, VirusScan Online and VSOCheckTrack. Tried to remove them in msconfig, but they come back everytime.

I think, this is what causing Avast not to be activated.

Is there anyway that I can remove those files from McAfee from the computer.

Thank you for your precious help.

If you couldn't remove (clean) every McAfee trash left behind, you won't be able to use avast... they will conflict.

Is there anyway that I can remove those files from McAfee from the computer.
Isn't anything on their website?
Maybe you can remove the files first, booting and then use a Registry Cleaner (or even, if you know how to do that, clean manually).
I'll try to work on a solution meanwhile  8)

McAfee Uninstaller 6.50.1018: http://www.tucows.com/preview/195895
Uninstalling McAfee: http://www.helpdesk.uconn.edu/virus/mac/html/mcafee-uninstall.html
Uninstall McAfee VirusScan Home: http://www.bc.edu/offices/help/meta-elements/doc/articles/html/RX-uninstallmcafeehome.shtml

For Outlook...

This is a follow-on to my earlier note about upgrading from McAfee to Symantec antivirus. It only applies if you are an Outlook user who has upgraded from McAfee and is now receiving an error message each time that Outlook starts up. If you are not an Outlook user, or if you're not getting any error messages, stop reading now -- this doesn't apply to you. Go ahead and skip to the next section.

Outlook users will get some sort of "plug-in" error when you start up Outlook. This is because the McAfee installer does not properly uninstall the McAfee plug-in for Outlook -- that's what causes the error when you then go back into Outlook.

Here are the magic incantations to fix this situation:

Start up Outlook.
Ignore the error message (by clicking "OK" or similar).
Click on "Tools"
Now click on "Options"
Now click on "Other"
Now click on "Advanced Options"
Now click on "Add-In Manager"
The very first entry in the "Add-In Manager" page should say something about VirusScan. Uncheck the check box next to the item.
Click OK.
Exit out of Outlook.
When you restart Outlook, you should not get any error message.
That's it. Now, you've completely uninstalled McAfee, including the Outlook plug-in.

Well, if you Google you'll find a lot of solutions  8)

 :)  Hi all :

I wonder HOW you "remove it" in the 1st place !? Are
    "McAgent, McUpdate, VirusScan Online and
      VSOCheckTrack " listed in your "Add/Remove Programs " ?
A brief visit to the McAfee site recommended looking there
1st, and if present, try "uninstalling" EACH "component"
one at a time" . That's how I started by "removing" Norton
a while back . If this simple way does NOT work, then
"Tech"s advise is the way to go .

That's what I though. Have to remove those McAfee files first.

But, I have tried every thing (At least, I though I did...). I used Regcleaner, McAfee does not appear in the list, used msconfig, McAfee files are there, but won't delete, used Startup, McAfee files are there, but every time I delete them, they come back.

Again, I remind you, that I have deleted McAfee soft before installing Avast 4.7.844. Made a search for McAfee files, none listed.

System : Win98,2ed. - Zonealarm (no trouble with Zonealarm, connect ok and autorize Zonealarm to let access Avast soft.), Lavasoft Ad-aware, seems to be working ok.

I have look in the regedit manualy under LocalMachine-Software, did not find any registration for McAfee anywhere.

So what is left to do, so that Avasoft work ok. Any suggestions, are welcome.

Thank you for your support.

Have a nice day. Ho, by the way, my time is 15h20 and your time is somewhere around 07h00. Where are you guys?

P.S. In response to the tech support, I have look in the Add/Remove prog. nothing concerning McAfee Soft is listed. Thanks for the sugg. But, I will go to McAfee webs sites and see what can be done there.

Fallowed your sugg. and dl McAfee Uninstaller. Found no files about McAfee. Clean some files though.

Did not remove this time Avast from computer. Instead, repaire the soft. Restar the computer and on startup, bang!. The 2 Icones in blue are in the tools bar. Got a msg from the soft saying that an error occure. But did not give any info on the error.

I'm using Outlook Express V.6 for my mail. Couldn't retreive my mail from the server. Got a msg :

Échec de la connexion au serveur. Compte : 'pop.videotron.ca', Serveur : '127.0.0.1', Protocole : SMTP, Port : 25, Sécurisé (SSL) : Non, Erreur de socket : 10061, Numéro d'erreur : 0x800CCC0E

And for the news :

  Protocole : NNTP
   Port : 119
   Sécurisé (SSL) : 0
   Code : 800ccc0e

Check my info on connection with the server. Everything seems to be ok.

So, can't retreive my mail or my news.

Any other sugg. for this probl. ?

Thanks for your great help.

With 98\Me:

1. Configure your email accounts to work without the antivirus and test them.
2. If everything is fine, close all your email clients (programs).
3. Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard
4. Follow the non Outlook/Exchange option (i.e., the second one).
You can choose the supported email programs and select all the accounts
(even the ones created in the future).
5. Configure your email accounts to use avast! as antivirus.

Hope this helps.

So onless, that you have the solution that settle ounce and for all the installation of Avast. I will be going on to another software.

Have a nice day.

This problem could be:
Lavasoft Ad-watch blocking the startup items of avast.
McAfee conflict.

For sure, avast installs and works... Tons of computers have it...
Unfortunatelly, in your case  :'(
