Multiple profiles and avast4.ini
« on: July 05, 2006, 05:55:03 PM »
I'm having problems understanding how to set up avast version 1.5.0.4 (20060516) to work w/ Thunderbird and multiple profiles.  I basically use two different pop servers.

Can avast be set up to scan both servers ?

The latest version of avast home/pro is 4.7.844 31-05-2006 where are you getting the version information from ?

What is your operating system ?
avast can scan multiple pop3 accounts and if you have winXP, win2k, there should be any set-up to do as the Internet Mail provider acts transparently so if your email account details are correct it should work with multiple pop3 accounts.

However, I don't use Thunderbird, so I can't say how the multiple profiles/identities (rather than simply multiple pop3 accounts) might impact on scanning. But I would assume if you are logged in under a profile/identity in tbird that the accounts for that identity would be scanned.

If you could explain the problems you are experiencing, any warnings/errors, etc. it could help especially for those avast members that use tbird.

The version number quoted appears to be that of Thunderbird.

avast neither knows or cares that you are using Thunderbird as your mail client.  The avast Internet Mail scanner just intercepts all activity on the standard POP3, SMTP, IMAP (and NNTP) ports.

So 1 Thunderbird profile or a thousand - makes no difference.

I should have added as David and Tech did ...

If you use WinNT/2000/XP then the avast Internet Mail scanner (if you have it running) will automatically perform the mail scans.

For Win98/Me then additional one-time setup is needed and would need to be done on each profile in turn.

I'm runnig Win2K Pro, so i guess I'm O.k.

I was just concerned because it is not adding the notes into scanned msgs.

Thanks everyone for your input.

May I assume that you have checked the option to have the "clean" text inserted into your received email messages?

Is the text failing to appear in all messages or just in some of them?

If you look at the detailed headers of your email messages are you seeing the avast X-Antivirus header lines being added to the incoming messages?

Don't forget that you will not see the inserted note in the 'Sent Items' folder of your mail program,
because avast adds the note after the mail leaves the mail program.

Yes, both send and receive are checked, and no text msg. is added and neither do I see the avast X-Antivirus lines in the headers.

Well... it's not working...
Did you install AVG or Norton antivirus in the past in this computer?
Do you use any spam killer application?
Do you have ClamWin antivirus plugin installed?

Just one more question to add to those of Tech ...

are you using any kind of network connection accelerator software?

I've had AVG on this computer in the past.

Also, I use Naviscope to block adds, popups, cookies, etc.

Well, are you sure it's properly uninstalled, I mean, if you search for Grisoft and AVG keywords in Windows Registry, do you find anything at LEGACY keys of the registry?
