Keeps asking me to restart.
« on: July 06, 2006, 04:53:49 PM »
Everytime my computer is booted up, Avast tells me that it needs to restart the operating system.  How do I make that go away?

I tried to use the program and it completly trashed my system--I'm am rebuilding it now--2 days lost forever--no tech support respones and no help from forum
Delete AVAST and never run it again!  Go buy Norton or Macafee

Operating system restart needed by avast message - First check the contents of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\setup.log file, which should show you why it thinks the reboot is needed.
This could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\reboot.txt

Lets be perfectly honest, you didn't uninstall your previous AV prior to installing avast and on reboot the two AV conflicted.

There have been many people trying to help you in the forums, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22036.0. Yes you have had a bad experience, but lets not forget you contributed to your problem it wasn't all avast's fault.

well i'm not gonna go back to system works and such because programs like NAV and Macafee are just crap.

avast has been the number 1 rated antivirus program out there.  So if you don't like it, then don't use it.

I can post up my system log file if that would help... i have no idea what it means.  Should i?

It's not truth... Well, at least, the users are here to help.

Delete AVAST and never run it again!  Go buy Norton or Macafee
Well, I've used both in the past... I won't change avast for any of them.

I've posted a technical tentative of help in other thread.
Hope it helps in anyway.

Try the deletion of the reboot.txt file I suggested above and let us know what happens when you reboot.

1. Your initial ZA setup was correct answer No for free version as it doesn't have a privacy module in it. So you should not have answered Yes as this disables the transparent web shield function and you would have to manually set your browser/s to use the web shield proxy.

- ZONE ALARM - AVAST Web Shield compatibility dialogue - Install/Update Question - YES or NO

If you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off web shield transparent mode proxy.
Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).
Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line.  Save the edited avast4.ini file.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast compatibility dialogue box the transparent mode proxy in web shield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video

For IE - broadband users: - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for IE
For IE - dialup users - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for IE (Dial-up)
For Firefox users - Tutorial - Web Shield Proxy Set-up for Firefox

It would probably be easier to reinstall avast and answer No than manually setup any browsers.

2. So at least the reboot.txt was present, which normally after the reboot it should go. There are possibly some registry entries which are calling for a reboot,  you can also check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains "PendingFileRenameOpertaions".

Check its contents and if there's only "reboot.txt" from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don't delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

If this seems too frightening or challenging, Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it where you can find it.

Uninstall, reboot, run the uninstall utility, reboot, install, answer No to the Zone Alarm compatibility issue, reboot.

I'm as baffled as you are if you also ran the uninstall utility which should kill everything including registry keys, etc. and then installed, I'm at a loss as to what it could be.
