Are you familiar with the registry?
If so, have a look at
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices

Anything about avast there?
If so, what?

the first one the .....\Run  has something there.     C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe thats the path of the entry.

i do not have a .....\RunOnce

i have a \Run-   nothing with avast under there

and \RunOnceEx   has nothing with avast under it.

and i dont have a \RunServices

Did you downloaded avast again or did you used the copy that you already had?
Could be a damaged download

I deleted the old setup file and used a new downloaded setup file.

still getting that message.

We are as baffled as you are.
I have never, in over two years on the forums come across this restart problem, which hasn't been resolved by the options we have given.

well i'm gonna have my friend look at the problem.  He thinks it has to do with some acer power management program.  So hes gonna run a couple tests on his old laptop.  I'll post results when i hear back from him.

ok.  got word back.  Basically i just shut down the power mangament of the acer stuff.  Then booted it.  Used msconfig to keep the power management from starting up.  And same problem.  Weird thing is that my friends same laptop model, runs perfectly.

First of all this just may be a coincidence and I have very little computer knowledge. But, when I first downloaded avast I always got the restart question too when first logging online. I thought it was annoying but clicking no made it go away. Anyway see my other post about download installation not working  and running repair as suggested by DavidR. Not only fixed my problem but I just noticed it quit asking me about the restart. Simply tells me there is an update and then goes away, used to tell me that and then ask to reboot. Wierd?
