Avast and Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 high security
« on: July 08, 2006, 06:25:11 PM »
I am running XP Sp2 with Avast 4.7 with Zone Alarm Pro 4.5 and have had problems with ashmaisv randomly terminating with an application error and then restarting. This occurs even when Outlook Express is not even running.

Too make a long story short the solution was to to put address 127.0.0.1 in Zone Alarm's Trusted Zone.

Well ZA Pro 4.5 is getting a little long in the tooth, now it is version 6.5, so aside from improved security elements, it might also help with compatibility ?

That adding 127.0.0.1 to the trusted zone seems strange if a trusted application ashMaiSv.exe should have full access, but if it is a solution that works who am I to say its strange ;D

There have been reported issues with ZA Pros Privacy functions (on later ZA Pro versions) but that only relates to the web shields transparent proxy. Since you are using XP the email scanner is also transparent. Previously there have been issues with ZAP forgetting an applications settings, even when allowed access, one of the options is to delete the entry and then try to collect your email ZAP should ask permission again, allow full access.

Some light reading on Zone Alarm 6.5 http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22050.0 there are some other topics relating to ZA 6.5.

Hi DavidR,

Well to put it like a joke, ZoneAlarm zoned out on me, or rather "zoned in". I had to reboot again to start the client again, but that is normal.

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

As far as I know ZA puts Loopback Adapater (127.0.0.1) in the trusted zone by default.  If it had to be added something went awry.

Perhaps because it is an old version of ZA Pro and that wasn't part of the functionality then.

Good point.
