Two versions of SecureLine VPN?
« on: September 11, 2018, 04:15:09 PM »
In my Win10 machine's taskbar I have two SecureLine icons, see attached image. The one on the left that looks a bit like a lightbulb is disconnected, the lock image on the right is connected.

The disconnected lightbulb shows a tooltip when moving the cursor over it that says "SecureLine VPN: Disconnected", and clicking on it shows the VPN as OFF. The lock image on the right says "Avast SecureLine: Connected", and clicking on it shows the VPN as ON.

What does this mean? Do I have two versions of the software installed? How to get rid of the lightbulb version (I think it is older, because an update changed the icon into the lock)?

Thank you.

Apparently, you have the old and the new standalone versions. If you really do, search for it on Control Panel and uninstall it.
It's easy to see who is the old one.

The new version on Control Panel:

Windows 11 Pro - Version 21H2 - 64 Bits | Avast SecureLine VPN - Standalone

Thanks, Raeken. The problem is that when I go to Control Panel, I only find the new version. See image 1.
When I scroll down to 'S' where the old SecureLine VPN should logically be, there's nothing. See image 2.
I went through the entire list of programs but nothing remotely resembles anything that might be the old version.
*scratches head* What next?

Weird... Technically, you cannot have both versions installed. But something wrong could happened.

Do you have the SecureLine component installed on your Avast Antivirus?

You can, also, uninstall and install it again and see if it helps. Repair your Avast and reinstall SecureLine standalone.

Weird indeed. I'm using the free Avast Antivirus and the paid Avast SecureLine. Both seem to have the same licence number. I have no idea where to look for the 'extra' SecureLine, which seems to be the older version.

Maybe I should just leave everything as it is, because the new version of SecureLine seems to be working OK. It's just annoying not to know what is going on.

Ha, I've found at least a quick-and-dirty solution, see image. I turned the Show etc switch off, now red in the image.

The problem may have its roots in the fact that I used to have the paid Avast Security Suite (or whatever it was called) but switched back to the free version of Antivirus when the licence expired, but renewed the paid SecureLine. Maybe the ghost lingers on from the paid Security Suite version.

Raeken, thanks for the pointers! I didn't come to think about the possible connection between the paid and free versions until your comment.

If you have any hints as to how to remove the SecureLine component from the now free, previously paid-for Antivirus, I'd be grateful. Otherwise, I'll just leave things as they are now. At least I got rid of the annoying superfluous taskbar icon.

Go to Menu > Settings > Components >
Under Privacy you'll find SecureLine, select Uninstall Component.
You'll be asked to reboot your system. Problem solved. :)

Hi, bob3160, and thanks much for your help! Where do I find the "Uninstall" option? See image, and please accept my apologies for being such a newbie :)

Not a problem.

You'll need to select Avast in Programs and Features if Windows 10>Highlight and right-click and select Change

Best to do this in an Administrative account.

Choose Custom Install and deselect Avast VPN from installed features.  Don't choose Install as that will not change anything.  It will install all features Avast normally installs as default and that is not what you want.  Allow Change/setup to complete, and reboot when done.

[EDIT:]  A little more detail on how to do this here:  (Thanks Asyn)  https://support.avast.com/en-us/article/96/
You'll need to select Alternative Method to see what you need to do.

If you're using the current version, under components> Security when you see SecureLine,
if it's installed, you have the option to remove it. If it hasn't been installed, you'll have to option to install it.
In your case, you need to uninstall it and reboot when asked.
Once rebooted, install the standalone version.
