resident protection is MIA

I just installed avast home on a computer that is using windows 98 se.  the second time i turned the computer on my resident protection went inactive and will not restart.  i know nothing about avast (obviously) and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  thank you!

Do you, or did you have another av installed? If you had a previous av, how did you uninstall it?

If you are certain only avast is installed, then try uninstall reboot reinstall.
