Disk usage issue
« on: September 12, 2018, 01:18:04 PM »

What is Avast actually doing when it jumps up to as high as 4.5MB/s disk usage when I open up a simple single youtube page (not even one with a video playing!)
Which solutions / better anti-virus programs that don't constantly advertise or try to install things without my consent can I try?

Hi Zyzyx,
to find source of disk usage I would like to ask you to capture an xperf log and upload it to avast ftp server.

1) download ADK  https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/get-started/adk-install
2) Run cmd as admin and type to start tracing : xperf.exe -on DiagEasy+DISPATCHER+Profile -stackwalk profile+CSwitch+ReadyThread -start user -on 72AA3505-D4D6-4527-A088-92534DA1082C
3) Induce the issue
4) in cmd type : xperf.exe -stop user -stop -d _xperf_merged.etl
5) zip as Zyzyx_2018_xperf_merged.zip and upload it to avast ftp server ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming

Thank you for help !

Hello,

I have also noticed this behavior today only. It occurred shortly after boot and first the disk usage was connected with Avast Installer (instup.exe process). I guess there was some update which was followed by a quick scan afterwards. It was quite unusual and unannounced though, so perhaps some comment from Avast could dismiss the doubts and concerns.

You did say you booted?  Likely cause is a program update, see version numbers below my post.  It was 18.6.3983.0 and updated on reboot to current version number.
