100% Disk Usage with Fresh Install of Avast. Ridiculous
« on: October 13, 2018, 03:38:27 PM »
All over this forum, going back several years, people report my problem. After boot or wake-up (on a brand new computer)  avast pegs disk usage at 100%.  I have even disabled most extras and it's still happening, making my PC slog for at least 15 minutes unless I disable ALL shields.  That temporarily solves it if I wait a few minutes, but even after re-enabled.

Avast continues to pretend this is a non-issue, yet it's reported from here to Tom's hardware and back again.  If this isn't addressed soon  (after 3 years) I am going to take the issue to Twitter and see if that gets any response. If this message is like all the rest, it won't get one either.  I guess I'l just have to try AVG then.

Also, the Capcha in this board is one of the most unreadable I've ever seen. I have to ask for about 9 images before I can even read half the letters

You'll find that Avast is only monitoring whatever is running on your system causing high disk usage, I see it on many systems with or without Avast, try removing all AV's just leaving Defender and you'll get the same result.

AVG is owned by Avast and as such components and definitions are similar so I doubt you'll see a different result using AVG over Avast.

Craig, I don't see this ubiquitous problem you report on the web.  And when disable Avast, the disk usage drops to normal in 10 seconds.  Every time.  Taken together, these two  things make me skeptical.  If people around the web were waiting 15 minutes every time their PC wakes up from sleep, I would think it would be discussed a bit more.  But I only see these complaints here.

As for Captcha, I don't mind captchas.  But this is one of the most unreadable I have ever seen.  I need to cycle thru 3 or four to get one that is unambiguous.  Similar to the other problem, I've never seen this captcha anywhere but here.

I see no recent complaints of high disk usage with Avast (going back several years is pointless as Avast versions and systems have changed), it's generally one of the lightest on system resources.

As you've not given any system details it's impossible for anyone to try and provide assistance, other details including third party security software running with Avast if any :-\  previous AV's used and if they been cleared out using legitimate vendor removal tools prior to the installation of Avast.

You've completed 3 posts now so captchas are no longer your problem :)

I didn't provide any system details, as I'd seen discussions of this exact problem going back 2 years, I assumed it was a knowing problem and someone would have an easy fix. Clearly, that's not happening. So which details would be helpful?  This problem has existed since the day i got  this dell, and avast was the only AV product i installed. I ever  prevented mcAfee shovelware when I set up the machine.  So what info would be helpful in diagnosing this?  I'm determined that it only ads 4 minutes to my boot time, but that's a lot of time when in a hurry.

Any help or ideas appreciated..
