smart scan stuck at 82% for hours

Anyone have this problem? 
My workaround has been to create custom scans which run to completion fine.  But I'm probably missing things.

Have you tried a 'Repair' of your Avast installation?

I had not.
And, I did.
Now it's stuck at 80% instead of 82%

- Which version..?
- OS..? (32/64 Bit..? - which SP/Build..?)
- Other security related software installed..?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast..?

1. Download Avast Free Antivirus: https://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_offline.exe
2. Follow instructions: https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed Avast versions..!!)
3. Reinstall Avast with the downloaded installer from point 1.
4. Reboot.

why download free 1st when I'm just going to uninstall it in step 2?

You'll be downloading the latest version. Then you're going to totally remove the old version

it does spend a lot of time around 80% but then finishes.

well.......
Sensitive Data Shield (which I've never run before) told me I had an issue, so I ran the scan

stuck at 98%  for 20 minutes so far...
