High usage by service, and blocked web access
« on: October 21, 2018, 01:05:43 AM »
Been using Avast for years and am now having some weird issues. After a few days, Avast Service ends up sitting at very high usage and cannot be disabled or terminated in any way. Closing all other programs doesn't fix it either - it just sits there hogging CPU. I can try to disable all shields, but this doesn't help either... usage remains high. Once disabled, the icon no longer responds and I can't restart them or anything.

During this time, all web browsers lose internet access, and even Windows says I have no internet connection. Disconnecting and reconnecting doesn't fix this either. Rebooting seems to be the only thing that brings things back to normal.

I have tried completely removing and reinstalling Avast, and this hasn't resolved the issue either. What else can I provide for info to help troubleshoot this problem? I'm on Win10 1803...

Do you shut your system down every night ?

I leave my winXP system and I have found over the last couple of program updates that the AvastSvc.exe get up to 50% + and that has an impact on browsing and some other functions.  I have found this starts to happen after 4-5 days usage and the only way to resolve it is to reboot.

I haven't noticed it as much on my win10 laptop (with the same version and build number of avast), though this system isn't in as regular use as my desktop system.

No, I don't "shutdown"... I hibernate. Have been doing that for many years now...

So, basically, you're seeing the same thing - Avast Service is having a problem with this... nice to know it's not only me. I hope Avast can look into this and fix it.

I'm not seeing it on a high frequency, whilst it doesn't happen every day and for the most part I don't see it gradually increase or spike.  I just notice things slowing down (browsing mainly) on checking the task manager I see  AvastSvc.exe get up to 50% and firefox (which can be a bit of a hog at times with lots of tabs open) isn't showing a lot of cpu usage.

The last time I shut down my system was a few days ago and no high CPU usage, which makes it difficult to identify the cause.

I don't use hibernate as that can cause a lot of activity and possibly AV activity, I just put my XP desktop into sleep.

No sleep, No hibernate. The system is either on or it's turned off. :)

Check this thread.

We posted within a few minutes of each other and I got a solution from Schmidthouse.  He suggested a clean install and the details are in the post.  It worked perfectly.

Nice to know. :) I put those directions together quite some time ago.

Yes I have tried clean installs, cleanup tools, repairs, etc... none have fixed this particular problem.

I did just see another thread that talks about a fix in the beta version and a way to workaround with an ini file: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=145084.0

As my issue is not that frequent, I will just wait for the official fix to come out of beta, and hope that addresses it... but I want to be sure Avast is aware of it, at least.

Referring people to a 3 or 4 year old thread makes no sense. What happened back then doesn't apply to the current version of Avast.

So the problem seems to have gone away on my laptop, but my wife's brand new Win10 HP laptop is showing the same issues. AvastSVC will start taking up all the CPU and kill the connection at the same time. I don't have time to figure it out there, but I have uninstalled it for now. Not sure what the hell is going on with Avast, but this is very disappointing. Again, that is a brand new computer... no previous install of anything, and it's having these issues?!

Not sure how to resolve this, but I am willing to test a bit more later on... just to frustrated to deal with it today...

EDIT: I noticed the link to "how to install Avast" in bob3160's post... where it recommend using the clean uninstaller for the previous AV program (McAfee, I think). I may give that a try... not sure if I need to try other uninstallers as well... who knows what else HP installed in there to begin with? I only recall pulling McAfee during my setup process.
