You can use your friends CD but you need to use your own Serial #.

If you both have the same version of XP then you can use your serial with his xp cd.

So if you have an xp home oem serial key you can use any xp home oem installation cd, your serial key will work.

If you use an xp retail serial with an oem xp cd or retail cd with oem key it wont work.

I cannot use system restore becuase the computer will not go into safe mode.

My friend has a Windows XP Professional CD but I have Windows XP home edition.

Can I get away with using a XP professional CD on my XP home edition computer?

I think you'll mess your installation...
Won't it be better backup all your data and documents and restore your installation with your own CD?

Why do you have to get into safe mode?
Go to     start > Run and then type the following:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

That will bring up the SytemRestore GUI

becuase I keep getting:

We apologize for the inconveniance, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If ur computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectadly, or was automatically shut down to protect ur files & folders, choose 'last know good configuration' to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if u aren't sure what caused the problem, choose 'start windows normally'.

Options:

Safe Mode
Safe mode with networking
Safe mode with command prompt

Last known good configuration (ur most recent settings that worked)
Start windows normally

I've tried both 'Last know good config' and ' start windows normally' but you just end up back onto this screen after it appears to be loading up.

Sorry Omar,
I knew that from your previous posts. Must have had a temp. memory lapse.
Do you have the Original Windows Serial# which you received when you first bought the computer?

The only thing I can think of is that on the back of my computer there is a white sticker on it it has the Windows XP Product key.

Is this what you mean?

Yes that's exactly what I mean.
With that, you can use any WindowsXP Home version CD to install the system back onto your computer
or to try to do a repair.
Do you have access to a computer where you can burn an image to a CD?
