Thunderbird fails download new emails with Avast installed

I do computer work for "older people" and I have had 3 people recently call me saying they could not download emails.
Knowing a bit about computers I usually suspect their AV program, not always Avast, but lately it has been Avast.  So I uninstall the free one, run the clear program, reboot, start their Thunderbird and it downloads the emails, then I reinstall Avast and it works.
Any thoughts?

If they don't keep their Avast and TB updated, it might be a cert issue.

Yep.  Best option for support there is.
