Reboot of the computer
« on: July 20, 2006, 09:06:58 PM »
Hi everybody,

I just install the Avast!4.7 Home edition on my personal computer which is an Windows 2000 platform (before it was Norton antivirus 2005). Just after being connected on internet, Avast! always ask me to reboot my computer. It's a little boring and i think that's probably abnormal. So, just to be clear, i have KERIO personal Firewall 4.3 installed and Avast! programs (ashmaisv.exe, avast.setup, ashwebsv.exe) have all permissions.

Avast! version : 4.7.844
VPS : 0629-1

Do you have any idea about this systematic reboot?
Thanks in advance for your replies

Operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file <avast>\setup\reboot.txt

If deleting reboot.txt doesn't stop the requests for reboot check this:
Check this registry entry (right after computer restart):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, if it contains "PendingFileRenameOperations".
Check its contents and if there's only "reboot.txt" from avast4\setup folder, delete PendingFileRenameOperations, don't delete any other key.
Back-up (export) the registry key before you edit/delete, just in case.

Not sure what the problem with your shutdown might be (does this happen every time?), there could be something running that isn't ending correctly. Hopefully something may be in the windows event logs.

Well, removing all trash left behind by Norton won't harm too...

Ok, i will delete the reboot.txt (zip this file to save it). If it doesn't stop the systematic restart, i will try to delete the registration key.

I'll keep you informed,
Thanks,

Oh, better, before deleting, try:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Use Avast Uninstall for complete uninstallation (read http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_uninstall_util.html).
4. Boot.
5. Install again.

Hi again,

A complete uninstallation following by an a complete installation doesn't solve the problem. After asking an update for the program and VDB, Avast! asks me to restart. That's normal. After the restart, i connect my computer to internet and a few seconds after establishing the connection, he asks me again to restart.

What i should try?

BMT in your first post you mention that you had Norton antivirus 2005 installed
How did you remove Norton AV?
If  by Control Panel/Add/Remove program, this does not completely remove the Norton Virus
Please see this forum thread and follow Techs Nortons Removal advice and then reinstall Avast

Did you remove NAV completely?

I too have this problem, and have tried all the suggestions, IE: uninstalling, reinstalling, removing the txt file, and the registry key. As I write, I am about to hit the 'No' key on the computer I am having the problems on. This is my third computer to put this product on, and the only one I have had a problem with. It is brand new, and never had any antivirus installed. Are there any other ideas before I switch back to AVG?

Hi all,

Thanks for your replies. My stepmother just dies during last sunday morning, so i won't be available until next week-end. I removed NAV by the Control Panel/Add/Remove program only.

I removed NAV by the Control Panel/Add/Remove program only.

So, please, follow:

1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info.
3) Boot.
4) Install avast! Boot.
5) See what you get.

Full SymNRT info:
1. Download and save these three files to the Windows desktop:
   a) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/MSIFIX.bat
   b) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SymNRT.exe
   c) ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/linked_files/tsgen/SYMMSICLEANUP.reg

2. Run the three files that you just downloaded
   a) On the Windows desktop, double-click the MSIFIX icon.
      Click Run.
A black window may appear very briefly.
   b) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SymNRT icon.
      Click Run.
      Click Next.
Click I accept the License Agreement, and click Next.
Type the letters and numbers that you see in the white box, and then click Next.
Click Yes or OK at each prompt.
You may need to click more than once. Your computer may be restarted for you more than once.
You may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
   c) On the Windows desktop, double-click the SYMMSICLEANUP icon.
Click Run, and then click Yes.
      Click OK.

3. Boot.

Hi all,

Thanks for your sympathies Tednelly...
For tech... i follow all things written in your last post and it's still the same :(
I remove Avast! by the control panel...
I remove NAV by the control panel...
I remove the last NAV traces... by following the three steps described... with a boot for the step number 2.
I install Avast!
I update Avast!
Boot...
I connect my PC to internet : ask to restart... Restart...
I connect again my PC to internet : ask to restart...

I don't see a good end to this story... unfortunately!!!
____________________
I just make some "tests" by deleting the reboot.txt
After beink connected to internet, in the folder Avast/setup a file called avast.setup has been created and replaced by reboot.txt after asking me to restart my computer.
Is any thing linked to the VRDB?
I will try with the registry entry...
____________________
Nothing to do with the registry entry...
Each connection to internet, Avast! asks me to restart!!!!!
Do you see anything else?

Well, fellows. I had the same problem. Problem was solved:

1) found 2 viruses in winnt (alg.scr and hosts.scr) and deleted them
2) removed reboot.txt and the line in regedit as described above.
3) upgrade program and virus definition directly from avast! - now 4.7.869 and vps 631-3.

No more asking for reboot.
